Sydney in April

Looking for the best tours, activities & things to do in Sydney?

April in Sydney is a pretty laid-back month due to the typically generous amount of public holidays that are sprinkled throughout.

Sydney in April at a Glance -
Public Holidays: Good Friday - 6 April, Easter Monday - 9 April, ANZAC Day - 25 April
Season: Autumn
Average Temperatures: 22.4 - 14.7 degrees Celsius

With the Easter holiday period coupled with ANZAC Day, there are plenty of opportunities for extra free time that the average person can take advantage of. April also begins to mark the gradual descent of temperature as the season heads towards winter, with daily averages of around 22 degrees maximum and 14 degrees minimum still being relatively warm but also a significant drop from those felt in March.

Once again from mid-to-late April the Easter school holidays start up, meaning that the lines for attractions and the attractions themselves quickly become much more full - thus, it's often a good idea to visit Sydney in April during the first week rather than later on in the month if you're planning to do some sightseeing or visit some of the most popular tourist spots.

April in SydneyIf you are determined, however, to get some memorable experiences in Sydney during this particular month, it is advisable to participate in tours, activities or attractions that are based outside of the city itself; these can often be less crowded and, besides, are usually orientated around some of the most scenic natural destinations the greater Sydney area can provide. If you do intend to stay in the city, then one of the biggest events of the year - the Royal Easter Show - occurs annually and can be a great fun (albeit crowded) time for those with kids. Some of the best and most popular things to do in Sydney in April include:

Visit the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are a natural gem located a couple of hours' drive outside of Sydney, and the temperatures of April make for great conditions to visit this area - with the added bonus of being a scenic getaway from the crowded attractions of the city during the school holidays. An unmatched highlight of New South Wales' wonderful geography, the Blue Mountains are a natural kaleidoscope of contrasts and colour that are rich in both Australian bush and wildlife, accompanied by a distant blue-haze horizon from which the range gets its name.

Sheer escarpments, ruggedly beautiful bushland and awe-inspiring views from mountain lookouts are all on full display here, and whether you choose to drive yourself or join a comfortable day tour, the Blue Mountains will leave you with more than just an escape from the urban hustle and bustle as they are highly memorable in and of themselves.

Participate in an ANZAC Day dawn ceremony

Each year in Australia on the 25th of April, ANZAC Day rolls around once again for us to commemorate and pay our respects to those heroes who fought for our freedom in both World Wars 1 and 2 as well as later conflicts.

Dawn services to pay respects to these veterans are held annually throughout the country, and are marked with wreath-laying, paradise and the playing of solemn tunes, the most famous of which is The Last Post. In regards to Sydney, services are held at dawn at the Cenotaph in Martin Place as well as a parade through George Street towards Hyde Park with the iconic ANZAC Memorial is the final destination. It is highly recommended for every Aussie to participate in at least one dawn service in their lifetime, as the solemn yet respectful and prideful atmosphere is unlike that felt on any other day or occasion throughout the year.

Go on a Sydney Hiking Adventure

Another great (and completely healthy) alternative to a bus tour of the lovely regions outside the city is embarking on a hiking adventure tour through some of the most beautiful environments in New South Wales.

A range of trekking, hiking and bushwalking tours are readily available that provide you with a range of options for fantastic experiences of the areas both in and around the Blue Mountains. As part of the hike, you'll be taken to some of the best and most remote locations that many other visitors to Sydney will never get access to, all while enjoying the natural beauty that these great areas have to offer in the comfortable temperatures of April's mid-autumn climate.

The Royal Easter Show

An annual fixture of Sydney's celebratory culture, the Royal Easter Show is held every Easter and is a veritable extravaganza that includes not only massive displays of farm produce from the biggest players in that industry, but also a bevy of carnival rides, rodeo events, motorbike and skateboard stunts, livestock races, woodchopping competitions, parades, fashion shows, stalls and everything else you might expect from a carnival on a massive scale.

A magnet for kids in Sydney, the showbags that are sold are always top on the list of things children want to come away with from a visit to the show (often much to their parent's wallet's chagrin!). With bags that range from Powerade Sports to M&Ms, there is something spanning all spectrums and the show makes for an overall fun-filled, novelty day out with the family or for a group of young teenagers. The Sydney Royal Easter Show typically occurs for two weeks over the Easter period; for 2012 the scheduled dates are April 5-18, and the show is held at the Sydney Showground.
