Spring school holiday activities

With the next school break just around the corner, we’re taking one less thing off your plate by lining up holiday plans for the kids.

Here’s a list of the best things to do during the spring school holidays, so you can dodge the dreaded “I’m bored!”.

Whale watching

They might be out of the classroom, but you can still fit in some educational fun with a whale watching cruise. Now at the tail end of season, whales are heading down south, meaning this could be your last chance to spot one of these giants until next year.

Just make sure to pack a hat and plenty of sunscreen. You'll be spending a decent chunk of time under the sun watching the water, so sun safety is super important.

Zoos & aquariums

Is your little one an animal-lover? Then you can’t go past the classic trip to the zoo or aquarium. The comfy temps and sunny weather make for perfect conditions to spend the day watching their favourite creatures run, slide or jump around.

The good news is that while you need to buy tickets for kids and adults, most zoos and aquariums allow little ones 3 and under to get in for free.

Mystery picnics

If the kids go nuts for game night, make the most of the spring weather with a mystery picnic. They’ll have an absolute ball solving riddles and joining heads as you track down the prize: a yummy gourmet spread.

It’s exercise with a side of exploring, which is perfect for spring, when the weather’s not too hot or cold. Plus, it’s something most ages can have a go at, which makes it a good family-friendly option.

For this one, it’s best to chuck on some shoes you don’t mind getting wet, like old joggers or reef shoes. Also bring a towel in case the kids decide to go for a dip.

Boats are fitted out with picnic tables, cup holders and sunshades, so all you need to do is bring lunch. Ready-made dishes and bevvies are a must for a stress-free feed.

Jetski

Keeping the bigger kids interested during the holidays is no easy task. But a jet ski experience? That’s something the older ones can get around. And with the weather turning it up, there’s no better time to jump on and cruise the waterways.

No licence is needed, and teens aged 16 and up are allowed to drive the jet ski. Keep in mind you will need to sign for anyone under 18 on the day, so be sure to tag along and join in.
