Melbourne in

by Matt Hobbs

October is a special time in Melbourne during spring is popular for a number of reasons including its tempteratures, experiences and its social calendar.

Home to the race that stops the nation, Melbourne comes alive in October in the lead-up to the big race held on the first Tuesday of November. The entire month of October is dotted with unmissable social event surrounding the Spring Racing season, so if you're in the city and have a dress, fascinator and suit at the hand, try and snatch a ticket to one of these great events.

The beauty of nature and the abundant greenery in and around the city are also a major attraction as Melbourne is turned into a flourishing wonderland during October, providing visitors with the best of both worlds, the city and nature.

In terms of weather, Melbourne is generally a lot colder throughout the year and while October is out of Australia's winter season, the weather can still be quite cool. Visitors can expect wind and the odd rainy day, however, it is usually quite enjoyable.

October's blend of all the positives of Melbourne without the extreme crowds of the high-point of other tourist seasons make at a prime time to visit and soak in the city's combination of vitality, public art, lush gardens and parks, and scenic river skyline.

Travelling outside the city is also a very viable option for visitors looking for some scenery that places a focus on the impressive geographic features that can be found within an easy drive throughout the greater Melbourne region.

Areas that are both charming and visually impressive make for great destinations for a day trip, with popular choices during this season being making the journey to such lovely locations as Wilson's Promontory and the charming shire of Daylesford – a funky, vibrant town renowned for its culinary delights including cuisines, day spas, wineries and spectacular scenery.

Melbourne in October at a glance:

Public holidays: None

Season: Spring

Average Temperatures: 9.5 degrees Celsius to 19.7 degrees Celius

Accordingly, some of the most popular things to do in Melbourne in October include:

1. Visit Flemington Racecourse

Flemington Racecourse Melbourne

Location: 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington

All eyes in Melbourne rest on this acclaimed horse racing facility that has been the site of numerous prestigious races for over 150 years, and regardless of whether you are able to make it to one of the big racing events held at the track, or take a Melbourne sports and Flemington Racecourse tour to see the iconic venue along with many other famous sporting staples to be found in Melbourne including Rod Laver Arena.

Whilst the Melbourne Cup itself isn't held until the first week of November, the spring racing carnival is in full swing in October, and other big lead-up races take place during this time including the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate held on weekends as well as many smaller midweek race meetings at this time of year.

The atmosphere of Flemington Racecourse has to be witnessed to be fully appreciated – and even if you have no particular interest in horse racing, the surroundings of men and women dressed in their “Sunday best”, with some making outrageous fashion statements, make it an event that is well worth attending.

If you're willing to battle some potential crowds, there are few other occasions throughout the year that can match the Spring Carnival in terms of sheer spectacle.

2. Make the trip to Wilson's Promontory

Wilsons Promonotory National Park

Location: Wilsons Promontory National Park

“Prom Country” as it is known to locals is a true wilderness retreat away from the heart of Melbourne situated on the southernmost tip of mainland Australia. Cloaked in protected National Park, the area offers a bevvy of nature-based of activities to take part in including walking and hiking tracks, fishing, swimming and surfing (although the water in October may still be too cold for most).

Stunning views abound on all sides at Wilson's Promontory, and the area is brimming with a huge array of wildlife and birds, including one of the most popular animals that can be found in the region – the wombat, which can often be seen roaming the park at night.

If you're willing to put in the legwork, you can also expect to see such other Australian wildlife favourites as kangaroos, wallabies, emus, lizards and much more, all within their natural habitats.

If wildlife isn't your thing, Wilson's Promontory still provides some of the most accessible and spectacular coastal scenery in Australia as well as other natural features including Agnes Falls, Coal Creek community park & museum, and much more.

When looking to travel from Melbourne to Wilson's Promontory, you can expect a roughly 3 hours drive if departing from the Melbourne city CBD, although bear in mind a pass will be needed to pre-purchase if taking the CityLink (which offers the most direct route to the Promontory from Melbourne.)

3. Travel to the charming town/village of Daylesford

Location: Daylesford, VIC

Accessible just 90 minutes from Melbourne, Daylesford is situated in a Shire that contains the highest concentration of mineral springs in the entire country of Australia, which has made it a natural destination for those looking to relax in spa retreats and visit therapists for hands-on treatment.

Couple these holistic benefits with a healthy dose of breathtaking scenery, a number of historical and architectural landmarks, and some widely-acclaimed dining and wine tasting experiences, and it's easy to see why Daylesford has become an incredibly popular “escape” destination.

The area's inherent natural beauty coupled with its period character has also drawn a continually growing artistic community, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to partake in activities involving both the performing and visual arts. The town itself continues to maintain an atmosphere that reflects its beginnings as a mining town for Swiss-Italians, with many unique buildings that can be found throughout, and trees and plants that enhance these qualities with their lush, green looks.

Daylesford is situated 108 kilometres to the NW of Melbourne, with regular transportation services that continually operate from Melbourne to the town itself, and is well worth a visit during the spring and October in particular.
