Visiting Whitehaven Beach is a must on the bucketlist. We left Airlie at 7 with a great tour group on board the ferry, they even provied us with stinger suits. The tour was planned out very well. We got to spend couple hours in each destination. Including some lunch at Hamilton Island. I would recommend this tour is for people who are staying at Airlie for a short period of time.

Top tips

"Widely regarded as one of - if not the - most beautiful beaches in the world, Whitehaven Beach is one of the region's absolute must-visits."

Hamilton Island & Whitehaven Beach Day Tour with Lunch Review

Brittney Deguara

Experience Oz Travel Writer

With the warm Queensland sun shining high in the sky and the waters of the Whitsundays looking as blue as can be, we set out with Cruise Whitsundays on their Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach tour to explore their tropical backyard.

Departing from their comfortable terminal at the Port of Airlie in Airlie Beach, we checked in and prepared for a full day of exploring both Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach. Made up of 74 individual islands and being so close to the iconic Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays are definitely a bucket-list destination.

The perfect combination of adventure and relaxation, this tour allows you to do as much or as little as you please. If you so wish you can spend your time on Hamilton Island lounging by the pool and sipping a cocktail, or you can sign up for some watersports activities and explore the island.

The beauty of this tour is that you don't have to bring your own lunch as the tour includes a meal at either the Marina Tavern or Manta Ray Cafe, both on Hamilton Island. The pristine beaches and lifestyle in the Whitsundays is a highlight of this tour, as the natural beauty of the region is unmatchable in the country, if not the world.

How to get there

Airlie Beach is located near Bowen in North Queensland.

Car: You can drive yourself to the Cruise Whitsundays terminal at Port of Airlie, Airlie Beach

Transfer: You can purchase a seat on the accommodation transfer at the time of booking.

Foot: If you’re staying in downtown Airlie Beach, you can walk to the terminal. The walk takes around 20 minutes from the centre of town.

What you'll do

Depart Airlie Beach

The early departure meant an even earlier start as I made my way to Airlie Beach from its southern neighbour, Mackay. However, the gleeful staff that greeted me on arrival significantly improved the early start. Armed with a schedule for the day and my lunch ticket I was ready to board the luxurious vessel, Sea Quest.

Once on board we found a seat and enjoyed the beautiful views as we cruised along en route to Hamilton Island. With complimentary tea and coffee on board and a hoard of friendly staff eager to help you with anything they can, the 50-minute trip was as comfortable as can be.

Explore Hamilton Island

Cruise Whitsundays Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach Tour

Upon our arrival on Hamilton Island we were advised to be back at the dock by midday to ensure we don’t miss our connecting cruise to Whitehaven Beach. With that in our stride, we hired a golf buggy* for half a day and went on an adventure around the Island.

Driving around the island was also quite enjoyable, passing extravagant houses and houses in the making, makes you envy how the other half lives. The majority of my time on Hamilton Island was spent in the resort pool, which is free to use for visitors to the island.

Complete with a pool bar (which opens at 10 am) and deck chairs surrounding the pool, you can easily lose a few hours swimming around the large, kid-friendly pool.

Relax on Catseye Beach

Catseye Beach is a major attraction for visitors to the island and a walk along the wide beach saw us coming across snorkelers, shell-collectors, kayakers, stand-up paddle boarders, sand-castle builders and more.

Occupied by families, couples and everyone in between, if you're lucky you might be able to snag yourself one of the deck chairs to take in the views.

Enjoy lunch at Marina Tavern

Cruise Whitsundays Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach Tour

As our time on Hamilton Island was nearing an end, we made our way over to the Marina Tavern for lunch at around 11:30 am. At the tavern, we were given the choice of anything on the menu, which featured an extensive list of mouth-watering, pub-style dishes.

Serving up the likes of Greek, Caesar, Garden and Kangaroo loin salads for those chasing something lighter, Hawaiian, Mexican and regular chicken parmigiana, beer battered flathead, rump steak, chicken and beef burgers, lamb, chicken or steak wraps and pasta. All that was needed was the voucher supplied by Cruise Whitsundays and the meal was on its way.

Just be sure to watch your food as you enjoy your drink** and take in the views as the local crows and seagulls are always up for a free meal.

Journey to Whitehaven Beach

Cruise Whitsundays Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach Tour

Come 12:30 pm we made our way back to the marina to join the queue of less energetic but still eager guests waiting for the connecting cruise to Whitsunday Island. After re-boarding the boat and taking a seat on the vessel once again, we began the approximate half-hour journey over to Whitsunday Island’s world famous Whitehaven Beach.

Greeted by the blindingly beautiful white silica sand, it seemed the best was truly left to last. As my visit was in the middle of summer, it coincided with stinger season in North Queensland. However, the friendly crew on board encouraged everyone to take stingers suits to wear in the water.

We disembarked the boat via a ramp straight onto the beach and the crowds immediately scattered along a section of the 7-kilometre beach to find a patch of shade. The large group from the vessel and various other tours quickly dispersed along the tree line and in the water, making it feel as though you’re in your own piece of paradise.

Relaxing on Whitehaven Beach

Cruise Whitsundays Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach Tour

The next 3.5 hours were spent relaxing on the silica sand, running into the vibrant blue and clear waters, posing for photos and walking along the length of the beach. Cruise Whitsundays’ staff photographer was wondering around snapping professional photos** of customers on the beach, which was a great way for guests to commemorate the journey to this beautiful part of the world.

To pass the time on the island, Cruise Whitsundays staff had set up volleyball and provided numerous beach balls for guests to use. There were various games breaking out all along the beach with laughs and cheers bouncing off the sand.

As the vessel began returning to the beach to collect us all, a line started forming of tired yet happy customers. With one final shake and brush to get rid of unwanted sand, we boarded the boat one by one up the ramp while having our sandy feet hosed down.

Cruise back to Airlie Beach

Cruise Whitsundays Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach Tour

The return journey was significantly quieter than the ride we enjoyed that morning, however, it was made better by complimentary afternoon tea that was served to eager passengers.

With a selection of fresh fruit and muffins as well as tea and coffee (all complimentary) the cruise back to Airlie Beach was a breeze. With stops at Hamilton Island and Daydream Island to drop off and pick up customers, we arrived back at the Port of Airlie by 6:20 pm.

What’s included?

  • Lunch at Marina Tavern or Manta Ray Cafe on Hamilton Island
  • Full use of all resort facilities on Hamilton Island
  • Complimentary tea and coffee on board the Cruise Whitsundays vessel
  • Afternoon Tea on board the boat on the return journey
  • On board commentary
  • Use of beach balls and equipment on Whitehaven Beach

What to bring

As lunch is included in your tour package, all you'll need to bring for the tour is your personal belongings. Everything from beach towels, swimmers, hats, a change of clothing and entertainment are always at the top of the list. It's also a good idea to bring your own water as the north Queensland heat can at times be overwhelming.

If you're eager to purchase additional food and drinks on the island and souvenirs from the stores on Hamilton Island.

  • Depart Port of Airlie: 8am
  • Arrive Hamilton Island: 9am
  • Marina Tavern lunch: from 11am (recommended you arrive around 11:30am to allow enough time)
  • Depart Hamilton Island: 12:55pm
  • Arrive Whitehaven Beach: 1:30pm
  • Depart Whitehaven Beach: 4:05pm
  • Arrive Port of Airlie: 6:20pm

My Recommendations

This Cruise Whitsundays experience as a whole was one of the most enjoyable adventures on the Whitsundays that I have experienced to date. With an array of friendly staff both at the terminal and on board, a luxurious and comfortable vessel and a perfectly timed day, this is one adventure that is perfectly suited to first-time visitors to the Whitsundays or returning visitors looking to experience it again.

Suitable for all ages and abilities, you can choose to do as much or as little as you please on both islands with no restrictions. As a reputable operator in the Whitsundays, Cruise Whitsundays has worked hard to perfect their popular day trip and the results are evident in the large groups waiting to board the boats each morning, rain, hail or shine.

*Buggy hire is not included in the tour and comes at an additional cost on arrival.

**Drinks available for an additional cost.

***Photos to purchase for an additional cost.
