Jim 3 years ago With two friends from Brisbane, my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful cruise in Sydney Harbour. The crew were friendly, the finger food appetising and the choice of Butter Chicken or Meatballs and gravy with rice and salad well cooked and appreciated. A highlight for me was the opportunity to climb the rear Mast and to perch atop the "Crows Nest" Platform up among all the rigging and the sails. A great experience.
It was a beautiful day and the crew were wonderful

It was a beautiful day and the crew were wonderful, hospitable and skilled. We didn't have lunch so cannot comment regarding the food. We felt a bit deceived about the ship. The advertisement show a full blown tall ship, with full sails on all the masts. We were on a replica of a pirate ship that had seals only on the foremast, not on the main or mizzenmast. Although this was a negative, we did enjoy the cruise. I think if we return to Australia we would not use your agency again.

This was a fantastic experience

This was a fantastic experience. Travelled at the very start of winter and whilst it was cold it was still so enjoyable. Just remember to pack a coat and beanie as those breezes can be bitterly cold. The food was okay, not much variety - some pulled pork, butter chicken and meatballs, plus rice and a green salad. Don't board the ship starving as I don't feel the meal will suffice. The canapés served upon boarding the ship were lovely however, as well as the brownies for dessert. They were amazing! The drink package is also great value for money. With million dollar views available for such a low price, this cruise is a must do.

This was an awesome cruise
Brittney 3 years ago

This was an awesome cruise! Had a great time on the water (despite the cold) and the wind let the crew put down the sail and turn off the engine. The crew was great and very friendly, the food was delicious (especially the brownies!) and the bar package gave us beer, wine and champagne for the whole 2 hours. The crew member telling stories about the region was a major highlight - it was really cool learning about the history of the area and trivial things like the construction of the Opera House. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would definitely come back again!

Really relaxed afternoon

Really relaxed afternoon. Food could have been a bit tastier. Staff casual and friendly. Overall well worth the experience . Extremely relaxing and relaxing . Amazing sailing under the harbour bridge....loved it ! Thanks everyone. X

Much better than expected

Much better than expected! We took this option for a hen's lunch cruise. The hosts were friendly and approachable, the boarding process was quick and painless. Food was tasty with plenty of vegetarian options and the sparkling wine flowed freely. My only suggestion is some music playing during lunch!

Enjoy this relaxing lunch cruise of Sydney Harbour. Sit back and relax or have a go at hoisting the sails for this authentic timber ship with crew.

Sydney Harbour Tall Ship Lunch Cruise Review

Brittney Deguara

Experience Oz Travel Writer

Enjoy cruising around the iconic Sydney Harbour and passing some of the country’s most famous landmarks aboard a historic oak tall ship from the 1900s with Sydney Tall Ships. This is how I spent a beautiful sunny day in the famous city of Sydney.

It’s one of Sydney’s longest-running and most iconic cruises, so I was more than happy to join the Tall Ships team for some sailing fun. With the Sydney weather putting on a delightful wind show and the sun shining bright and high, I arrived at Sydney Harbour to board the iconic and historic Soren Larsen. Built over 60 years ago in 1949, the Soren Larsen was one of the last cargo-carrying sailing ships built in Northern Denmark.

The ship was once used as a Flagship of the First Fleet Re-enactment Voyage in 1988, an occasion to celebrate the journey English settlers completed so many years ago. The 22,000 mile (35,405 kilometres) journey left Portsmouth, England to arrive a lengthy eight months later in Sydney on Australia Day, 1988.

With those long days of travelling behind her, the Soren Larson now welcomes guests to enjoy its beauty and smooth sailing through one of the most famous and iconic harbours in the world; Sydney.

That was the journey I undertook, and aboard the Soren Larsen, we were set to enjoy a delightful afternoon on the water with drinks, food, commentary and spectacular views. Now engine-powered, the ship departed Walsh Bay carrying around 20 passengers and around 10 crew members originating from all around the world.

What you'll do

Set sail

Sydney Harbour Tall Ships Review

After a short safety briefing, we were free to explore the ship and enjoy our first-class view. Travelling east, we made our way under the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and past the famous Sydney Opera House.

During the journey we learnt about the history of the region including interesting facts about the Opera House’s talented, inspiring and genius fathers and the intriguing and jilting history behind the building itself.

Enjoy lunch on board

Sydney Harbour Tall Ships Review

With the optional inclusion of the open bar package, we were welcome to the range of wines, champagne and beers on board to enjoy the free-flowing food coming fresh out of the kitchen. The drizzle of food began with platters of finger food passed around deck before it was time for our steaming hot lunch to be served.

The buffet-style lunch served up a selection of bites, including Butter Chicken, Meatballs, Pulled Pork with sides of white rice and salad. There were no vegetarians on board, however, the kitchen is able to cater for vegetarians and passengers with various other dietary requirements.

Explore the harbour

Sydney Harbour Tall Ships Review

Continuing our journey towards open water we passed Watsons Bay which is home to one of the Royal Australian Navy Bases, Taronga Zoo one of New South Wales’ most recognisable zoos and Fort Denison a historic island home now to a scenic restaurant.

Our journey aboard the Soren Larsen fell on a very fortunate day as the strong winds allowed us to actually set sail along the Harbour, an enviable experience for many.

Moving to the bow of the boat, we were treated to a collection of stories from our onboard commentator about the region and its rich history. This added a level of excitement to the journey as it was as though we were taken back to a time where tall ships populated the Cove and the now history was known as the present.

Climb the mast

Sydney Harbour Tall Ships Review

Watching the crew climb the mast to loosen the sails was an incredible and nerve-racking experience. Climbing high above the deck, and secured with a harness the two men worked together with a member on deck to prepare the sails for their release.

On every journey the Soren Larsen embarks on, one lucky guest is given the chance to climb the mast, hoist the sails and even steer the boat. This added extra is an amazing opportunity for someone to learn the ropes (literally) of an old and historic sailing ship. There were no brave souls today, so the hard work was left to the professionals.

Take in the views

Sydney Harbour Tall Ships Review

The remarkable views were hard to ignore with two of the country’s most iconic and famous landmarks acting as the backdrop to our incredible journey and photos were snapped left, right and centre by the majority of guests on board. Framing photos that you might think are reserved for professional photographers, the beauty of this famous region is easy to capture especially when aboard an open vessel.

Travelling back towards Walsh Bay we once again passed the Opera House and sailed under the Harbour Bridge. However, this time we were shown a different side to the Bridge, its musical and acoustic side.

With the louder voices on the journey bellowing out we could hear loud echoes throwing themselves back at us, a feature that was unbeknown to us prior to boarding this ship, the saying 'you learn something new everyday' proved to be true today.

The journey was scheduled to last for two hours and in what felt like a short journey we were beginning our journey back to land. The cruise departed at 1:45 pm and returned around 3:45 pm, providing guests with ample amount of time on the water, but perhaps not enough for lovers of sailing.

An intriguing way to see the Harbour for both tourists and locals alike, Sydney Tall Ships has put together an enjoyable and authentic experience with a collection of friendly and knowledgeable staff.

What's included

  • 2-hour cruise
  • A delicious buffet lunch
  • On board commentary
  • Sine, Beer & softdrink (drinks package only)

What to bring

  • Camera
  • Money (if you wish to climb the mast)
  • Hat & sunglasses
  • A jacket during the cooler months

My Recommendations

If you’re looking to spend your afternoon cruising around Sydney Harbour, I recommend doing it aboard an authentic tall ship. To experience a journey in this historic ship was just as incredible as it sounds and if the weather permits, the chance to sail properly makes it all the more exciting.

Hearing the moment the engine turns off and the sails are released is an experience unlike any other and feels as though you’ve stepped back in time. In addition to Sydney Tall Ships’ Lunch Cruise, they also offer a Twilight Dinner Cruise, Convicts Castles and Champagne Tour, Champagne Brunch Cruise, Wine and Canapés Dinner Cruise, and Overnight Cruise.
