What you can expect

Experience a two-hour and 45-minute guided adventure through a geothermal valley rich with culture, history, and natural wonders. Walk along bushland tracks and sinter paths as your guide reveals how ancestors used these mineral-rich pools for cooking and bathing. Taste sweetcorn cooked the traditional way in an ancient boiling ngāwhā, while hearing the legendary tale of Hatupatu and Kurungaituku, a story of courage and survival. Along the way, you’ll also visit the Kiwi Conservation Centre, the sacred Rotowhio marae grounds, and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.

Your journey ends with a cultural performance inside the carved meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua. Be welcomed with a traditional pōhiri and listen to waiata (song), mōteatea (chant), poi, and the stirring haka. With guided walks, food tastings, and a full cultural showcase all included, it’s a truly unique way to connect with the land and the people that have shaped this extraordinary part of New Zealand.
