One of Queenstown's must-do activities, the Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox combo will even give hardcore adventurers butterflies. Combining two thrilling adventures - the Shotover Canyon Swing and the Shotover Canyon Fox - these activities cement Queenstown's status as the 'Adventure Capital of the World'. The Shotover Canyon will see you drop from a 109 metre high platform above Shotover River for a smooth and exhilarating 200 metre swing. Reaching speeds of up to 150 kph you can enjoy the swing on your own or with a friend. To shake things up a bit from the normal adventure activity, there's a jump menu to let you choose how you take your 60 metre free fall.

You can go backwards, forwards, from a chair or do a flip to name a few. The second adventure included in this awesome package is the Shotover Canyon Fox. The first of its kind, the Canyon Fox takes you 182 metres above the Shotover River on a launch rail, or run off the 8 metre ramp, before dropping you down 5 metres and flying you 240 metres across the Canyon. Then take on line 2 with a friend and race back to the other side, 138 metres above the canyon.

Both of these activities offer incredible views of the Shotover Canyon if you can bear to open your eyes and hold in the screams. This package includes return transport from Queenstown and the chance to bring along a friend for free to watch you lose your mind. Taking around 3.5 hours to complete, trips depart every half hour from 8:30am to 5:30pm during summer and from 9:30am to 3:30pm in winter. All you'll need to bring is yourself, closed in footwear and appropriate clothing, the rest is awaiting you at the launch site. Book your Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox online today to ensure you have the most memorable and epic time on your next trip to Queenstown.

Brittney 2 years ago This was hands down the highlight of my trip! I swallowed my nerves and tackled both adrenaline-pumping activities and I'm glad I did! After being too scared to move on the Fox (it's very high) and getting the guys to slowly push me off, I made up for it on the Swing by doing the tandem Gimp Boy Goes To Hollywood (upside down) and I'm glad I did! This experience will stay with me for a while and the videos and photos were great to look back on! Loved it!

Brittney Deguara

Experience Oz Travel Writer

Imagine swinging through a canyon after hovering hundreds of metres above the jagged cliffs with nothing but a pin keeping you in place. Or try an imagine zipping over the canyon after a thrilling 5-metre free fall. These were two realities I was faced with when I joined the team at Shotover Canyon Swing & Fox in Queenstown.

Shotover Canyon Swing + Fox is one of Queenstown, and New Zealand’s, most popular and adventurous activities available. Located on the outskirts of Queenstown, just a short 15 to 20-minute drive from Shotover Street, Shotover Canyon Swing + Fox is reached only via the organised shuttle.

How To Get There

By Courtesy Coach: Catch the courtesy shuttle from Shotover Street in downtown Queenstown (or organise to be picked up from Shotover Jet if you’re staying out of town)

  • Highest cliff jump in the world
  • Thrilling experience
  • Great for couples and singles
  • Beautiful scenery
  • Friendly and funny staff
  • Memorable adventure

What You'll Do

Journey to the Swing

Queenstown Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox Combo Review

As we waiting at the shuttle stop to be collected the nerves had well and truly set in, the reality that we were about to tackle one of the most adrenaline-pumping, scariest and downright crazy adventures in Queenstown was beginning to make an appearance.

Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the world, and even this knowledge hadn’t prepared me for what we were about to experience.

We wound our way around the cliff faces in the shuttle bus accompanied only by the driver, a friendly, nerve-settling guy who briefly prepared us for what was coming, a young boy from Perth tackling one of the two activities and his dad who had just come along for the ride.

Shotover Canyon Fox

Queenstown Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox Combo Review

The first adventure off the block was the Shotover Canyon Fox. A recent addition to the Shotover Canyon, the Fox has been in operation for just over a year, so while you may feel like a safety guinea pig (their words not mine), this is a seriously safe activity.

The walk to the Fox is an uphill climb, so be prepared for a bit of physical exertion before you plunge off the side of the cliff. Once we reached the top we were greeted by two more crewmembers, each as jovial and humorous as the first.

After filling out a short registration form online which asked the basic questions, if you have any medical conditions or injuries, where you live, your age, etc. etc., and a quick weigh-in, we were fitted with our helmets and harness.

Apparently, I was handed the old harness, so we’d just see how this experience went. All jokes aside, the crewmembers were very experienced and professional and knew exactly what they were doing. So between jokes and teasing, there was a strong sense of professionalism as they performed all of their safety checks.

Taking the leap

Queenstown Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox Combo Review

Refusing to go first, I watched intently as the young boy bravely put is hand up to go first. With some more safety checks taking place disguised with nervous laughter (mainly from myself) he was ready to take off.

Choosing the Giant Strides style to propel himself off the platform, he soon became a speck in the distance as he zipped over to the other side of the canyon. It was then my turn.

The different drop styles are rated depending on their intensity level, however, whichever style you choose, you’ll still have your stomach rise into your mouth with the 5-metre drop from the arm jutting out of the cliff before being caught by the wire and zip line.

As the team clicked, clasped and tied me in, my nerves almost took over the use of my legs (I said almost). However, the power it did have over them halted my movement with it now reduced to little shuffles. As my nerves had almost debilitated me, the only thing I was able to do was to sit on the edge and get the team to push me off the side.

After the initial thrill accompanied by a few ear-piercing screams, I was able to get a grasp of my nerves, let go of the harness and enjoy this incredible experience and the beautiful views.

Across the other end of the zip line, I was greeted by two more friendly faces and pulled into safety. Before we could return to the other side of the canyon we had to wait for my travel buddy to zip across. He chose one of the braver descents; backwards. Once all three of us were seated in front of the second zip line we were once again clipped up to the wires for the return journey.

The return journey

A less intense zip line, the return line is a fun way to make it back to the office side of the canyon and allows you to race your friend! Hooked up to two side-by-side lines, we took a step back and launched ourselves forward to see who could arrive back at the platform first.

Again, in between squeals, I was able to enjoy this amazing view and take a moment to appreciate this incredible experience.

Though there was no footage of the zip line, the initial extraction was captured with a burst of photographs.

Shotover Canyon Swing

Queenstown Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox Combo Review

Now, this was the part of the experience I was looking forward to the most but also the least. I had seen videos of people trying all of the different jump styles; the chair, the Indian rope trick, the cutaway, and, in my opinion, one of the most terrifying, Gimp Boy Goes to Hollywood. So for some reason unknown to me, that is the one we chose.

The swing menu was extensive, featuring a number of different choices with a variety of scare levels measured in ‘undies’. So depending on how brave you’re feeling, there’s sure to be a style to suit your needs and nerves.

With our jump style chosen; tandem gimp boy goes to Hollywood, we watched on as the group before continued to jump, fall, run off the edge of the cliff. As our time neared closer, once again my nerves began to take hold, but the crew at the swing were even more humorous and that somehow settled me down, so kudos to those guys.

Swinging off the ledge

Queenstown Shotover Canyon Swing and Fox Combo Review

In the group of six, all of us going tandem, we were the first off the chopping block (so to speak). We were once again harnessed up, clipped into cables, tied to each other and given words of encouragement surrounded by laughter.

We were instructed to sit and moved to dangle over the edge of the platform before getting into position. In case you aren’t aware, Gimp Boy Goes to Hollywood is when you fling your head back, arch your back, lift your legs to entangle with the rope, and hope for the best.

With some aid to get into the correct position, the nerves had decided to show themselves in vocal form, my apologies to the guys on deck. The drop time inched closer and with no warning, we were suddenly free-falling 60-metres from 109-metres in the air and swinging in a 200-metre arc.

What's Included

  • Transfers to and from Shotover Swing & Fox from Shotover Street in downtown Queenstown

What To Bring

  • Comfortable clothing and shoes
  • Money, if you want to purchase photos, videos or merchandise
  • Go-Pro (optional)
  • Your sense of adventure!

My Recommendations

The entire experience was something I’ll never forget, and once we were lifted back to the platform and feet firmly on the ground, we had both considered doing it again. If once you’ve had a swing, you feel like having another go you can add another one for just an extra $45 which you can pay after you’ve finished.

We made our way back into the office to revel in the amazing adventure we just experienced and to write our names in the book to prove we came, we saw, and we conquered.

Hands down, this was one of the best and most thrilling adventures I have experienced to date. On top of that, the team at Shotover Canyon & Swing were incredibly fun, funny and fearless. My advice for those looking to try the Fox or Swing, just go for it! Even though your fear might be overriding the fun, try the most challenging jump, drop or push, you won’t regret it.

I now blurt out ‘Shotover Canyon Fox + Swing’ whenever anyone mentions the words holiday and New Zealand in the same sentence. A great adventure for anyone looking to test his or her limits, add another notch to their adventure belt, or simply try a new and more unconventional way to sightsee.
