Sunshine Coast Weather and Climate Information for Visitors

Overview

Looking for all the best tours, attractions & things to do on the Sunshine Coast?

The Sunshine Coast, located approximately a two hour drive North of Brisbane, is a region consisting of an urban strip famed for its natural attractions and consistently warm and sunny weather.

Lined with unbroken beaches, the climate is conducive to all things related to "beach life" - from the warm, clear waters to the cool ocean breezes that offset any excess humidity that may build up in the warmer seasons, the Sunshine Coast may have one of the most ideal warm climates in the world. Typically "colder" months in other cities only ever reach "cool" status, and the region is consistently busy with tourists visiting the busy hub and enjoying the sun.

Temperatures and Rainfall

As one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations, the overall balance of temperature and rainfall levels of the Sunshine Coast can be cited as a major reason why. A beneficiary of being in a location with one of the highest sunshine ratings in the world, the temperature fluctuations between the Summer and Winter months are relatively smooth with temperatures being generally comfortable all year round. Maximum temperatures throughout the year reach an average of approximately 25.2°C (77.4°F) with a yearly minimum average of 15.8°C (60.4°F). T

Rainfall on the Sunshine Coast is a relative rarity, with concentrated bursts happening over the brief rainy season in the more humid Summer months (mostly in January), and most often does not have a major impact on tourist activities as the majority of the rainfall usually occurs at night.

Seasons

Like most other tropical areas that have been converted into popular tourist destinations in the Northern half of Australia, the Sunshine Coast shows little distinction between four separate seasons and instead transitions mainly from "wet/hot/humid" from December to "cool/dry" from June to October, with all other months being somewhere slightly in-between.

Clear skies persist throughout the majority of the year and are not specifically restricted by season. When storms do occur, they typically happen late in the afternoon or later in the evening, ensuring the region is free from drought while also maintaining the large degree of daytime sunshine from which the region gets its name.

Summer

The heat of Summer never quite reaches the extremes of many other, larger cities in the country, and as such never becomes too hot to be a hindrance to enjoyment of any of the numerous attractions that blanket the area. Cool breezes provide the Summers with an extra layer of relief and protection from excessive heat.

Beachgoing is a staple of time spent on the Sunshine Coast during Summer, as numerous resorts, apartments and properties are located nearby the seaside to allow guests to take prime advantage of this. A variety of watersports also stem from this beachside obsession the region is contagious for; kayaking, waterskiing, surfing and even hover crafting are popular activities that give people of all ages and fitness levels the chance to hit the water and cool off.

Autumn

As Summer begins to wind down, the transition to Autumn is nearly seamless, as the temperature differences between the linking periods of the two seasons are barely noticeable; the Sunshine Coast's weather is far more accurately depicted as a slow gradient rather than a sharp rise or drop from one season to the next. These are popular months with visitors as temperatures generally range between a comfortable 13 and 25 degrees celsius.

While you will not notice much change in coloration of the local palms and other evergreen trees that dot the main city centre of the Sunshine Coast, heading out to the hinterland area shows that it brings a feast of colour with red-leaved Maple trees and beautiful camellias and azaleas springing forth with richly-scented blooms.

Winter

Winters are mild and temperate, although there are plenty of chances for experiencing cosy, romantic log fires if one wishes to journey inland towards the mountains. Never "cold" by any means, Winter maximum temperatures still hover around the high teens or early 20's celsius, meaning that with the exception of the dead of night and extremely early in the morning, barely a chill will be felt.

Days continue to be sunny albeit milder than the other seasons, with the added bonus that hotels and other accommodation prices are often offered at a discount due to it being "off peak" time, with the smaller number of tourists leaving vast stretches of golden sand wide open for your own personal enjoyment! Of course, on cooler days, there are also indoor attractions such as the iconic UnderWater World in the suburb of Mooloolaba, which has become an icon of the tourist district and is a must-see when travelling through.

Spring

Temperatures once again begin to rise, promising an ideal time to visit as "warmth" rather than "heat" is the name of the game and the weather continues to be sunny and clear. The waters of the Pacific Ocean in which the Sunshine Coast's beaches are located may still be slightly on the chilly side during this season, but most hotels and accommodation facilities in the region will keep their pools mildly heated to help satisfy your desire to swim or soak up some sun on the surrounding deck chairs.

Again during the majority of this season you will be able to find accommodation for relatively cheap rates as there are few major holidays so prices will remain low. Although it may not match the peaks of Summer, bringing sunscreen and other protective gear is still a good idea.
