Sydney in

October

by Matt Hobbs

By the time October rolls around in Sydney, spring is in full-swing and the weather will have warmed up substantially; expect blooming flowers, beckoning sand and surf, and warm sunny days with low levels of humidity slowly becoming the norm.

One of the biggest and most noticeable changes that October brings around in Sydney is the yearly commencement of Daylight Savings Time, with the clock being pushed forward by an hour in the pursuit of longer days to take advantage of more hours of sunlight and encourage additional outdoor activity.

Sydney in October kicks off its first week with the annual Labour Day holiday, a public holiday that many Sydneysiders often use to coincide with days off from work, so if you are visiting from either interstate or overseas it may be a good idea to give the city a miss during this (admittedly short) period if you want to ensure the attractions in Sydney aren't overcrowded.

One of the ideal months to visit Sydney due to the warm-yet-not-hot conditions that summer can quickly bring around, daily temperature averages in Sydney in October hover around the comfortable 22 degree mark with nightly minimums over approximately 13 degrees, while strong winds are also a hallmark of the month (and have combined with the dry conditions to cause some prominent bush fires throughout Sydney's history).

The warming spring weather is conducive to an ever-increasing range of activities that go along with it, and as time goes on the beaches of Sydney continue to gradually become more and more crowded as those in pursuit of relaxation, a swim or suntan flock to all the popular hotspots such as Bondi, Manly and Cronulla.

If beaches aren't specifically your thing, you'll still be spoilt for choice when looking for things to do; due to its balanced nature, October truly "caters for everyone" in terms of its offerings and available attractions that are thriving during this period. Taking part in sports and adventure activities, along with visiting the thriving New South Wales wineries and vineyards are just some of the mainstays that get people out and about during October in Sydney.

Public holidays: None

Season: Spring

Average Temperatures: 13.5 degrees Celsius to 22 degrees Celius

Accordingly, some of the most popular activities to participate in Sydney in October include:

1. Take a Wine Tour to the Hunter Valley

Hunter Valley New South Wales

New South Wales - and indeed, one of Australia's most famous wine-tasting regions - the Hunter Valley makes for a great trip from Sydney in October as the produce of the vineyards are typically in full-swing by this point, and the region itself is populated with some of the country's best boutique wineries.

A scenic tour will take you to this area that is brimming with lush farmland and rural Australian bush in comfort to not only enjoy the scenery of the landscape but also sample the Valley's bounty, with up to 30 premium wines awaiting to be sampled along the way.

Wine isn't the only produce from the region that receives acclaim however; such rich foods as hand-made chocolates and cheeses are another staple of the Hunter Valley and their quality reflects the pride with which they are produced. A great way to spend a day delighting your tastebuds while returning to Sydney at around 6:00pm.

2. Go on a Sydney Hiking Adventure

October has some of the most favourable hiking conditions in the Sydney region out of the entire year, with the weather combining with the blossoming spring scenery to form some great views and panoramas that are simply begging to be witnessed.

Providing a great option for nature-lovers as well as a refreshing escape from the rush of the city centre, a hiking trek or bush walk can be just what the doctor ordered as the fresh air and exercise combine with the amazing scenery to form a delightful day out.

Of all the possible destinations in the greater Sydney region, the Blue Mountains are easily the most popular destination for these types of activities, and it isn't difficult to see why; its spectacular, rugged landscape is populated with dramatic rocky escarpments, cascading waterfalls and the characteristic blue shroud which cloaks the ranges and from which they derive their name.

Hiking amongst the mountains offers both a fulfilling day and a very satisfying adventure during October.

3. Visit Canberra on a Day Tour

Canberra Australian Capital Territory from Sydney

Sydney's relatively southern location on the Australian continent makes it a reasonably short drive to Canberra, Australia's capital city.

Reachable in just over 3 hours worth of driving, as the political hub of our country Canberra makes for a great destination that offers both a cultural and historical break as it is full of attractions and nationally significant sites including fine art galleries, museums and many other cultural venues.

With such highlights on display as Parliament House, the Australian National Art Gallery, Australian War Memorial, Commonwealth Park and more, there is plenty to see and do that will easily fill up a day before returning to Sydney in the evening.
