Lift off over the Yarra Valley on a one hour hot air balloon flight that leaves the ground before dawn, when the air is at its clearest. You meet your crew at a launch site ringed by vineyards and rolling hills, and there is a job for you in the setup, helping the envelope fill as the burners push heat into it.
Climb into the basket, feel the ground slip away and watch the valley open up, with the Yarra River threading between hills and mountains as sunrise spills light across the vines. Between bursts of the burner it falls completely silent, which is when the scale of it really lands. Your pilots bring 18,000 combined hours of ballooning and run a full briefing before you leave the paddock, and photographs are taken in the air so you land with the proof. Stay on for the optional buffet breakfast and make a morning of it.
First the good things
First the good things, Global Ballooning has excellent contact right through and we're on time picking us up. The breakfast was so good, it was a buffet, there was pastries, cereal and hot food and you could try some wine. I loved how our pilot took a photo of us up in the air and we could download for free. The bad thing, was I felt it should've been cancelled, there was very poor visibility as it was so cloudy and it was showering when we packed up, so we were wet right through and cold. We were told the night before to bring spare shoes, which was too late for us as we were in Melbourne already. We ended up spending 40min drying our shoes with a hair dryer as we had another tour that afternoon. If it was a lovely day it would of been worth the money but it wasn't for us. I was told they checked the forecast but mine had said all week we were expecting showers.
Thoroughly enjoyable and an extremely professional morning was provided by Global Ballooning.
