For the third time in five years, you voted Queensland's Whitsundays as Australia's #1 must-visit travel spot, and to celebrate, we're taking a detailed look at what makes this gorgeous Aussie archipelago such an incredible part of our country.

In "The Whitsundays - the Best of the Best", Experience Oz in conjunction with Tourism Whitsundays will be highlighting the incredible experiences, stunning islands, and pristine seascapes of the Whitsundays.

Just what is it about this pristine collection of 74 flecks of land off Queensland's coast that resonates so strongly with travellers? Stats don't lie; we asked the Aussie public back in 2014, and you all agreed: Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is Australia's most gorgeous stretch of sand, with its incredibly powder-like silica and wonderful surrounding island views helping it take out the title. Over 60 of its islands are totally deserted While its card-carrying destinations such as Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Daydream Island and a handful of others all boast varying amounts of development, there are dozens of islands in the Whitsundays that remain uninhabited. Many of them offer the ability to camp, so if you've got access to your own water craft and are supplied well enough, it's possible to enjoy a slice of this gorgeous region without having to share it with another soul.
• 5. The region boasts some of Australia's most exclusive (and gorgeous) accommodation options... For those with deep wallets or looking to splurge on a special occasion, there are few more jaw-droppingly gorgeous places to stay in all of Australia than some of the Whitsundays' exclusive hotels. From the world-class offerings of qualia on Hamilton Island to several other top-notch island-based stays, there's a reason why honeymooners and celebrities alike have flocked to the Whitsundays over the years.
• 6. ...yet there's also plenty of choices of places to stay for those on a budget, too While the elite properties might be out of reach of the average family, the Whitsundays also offers a wide array of more affordable places to stay without breaking the budget, too. While on-island stays typically increase the price somewhat, staying at the mainland-based hub of Airlie Beach opens up a whole wide array of options - from backpackers to mid-high-tier 4 star resorts.

There's plenty to do on - and in - land as well The Whitsundays region isn't all gorgeous islands, luxury resorts and reef goodness - stick to the mainland and you'll have plenty to do as well, with a number of underrated regional spots easily accessible nearby. Seafood-lovers will be in their element here While not surprising given its aquatic leanings, the Whitsundays offers the chance for those with a taste for the bounty of the ocean to sample some of the freshest seafood in the Pacific. Some of Airlie Beach's top restaurants orient themselves around seafood, with prawns, mussels, scallops and oysters all featuring prominently on the menu. Prefer to cook up your own catch? No worries - the region is a hotspot for fishing as well, with guided fishing tours, beach-based angling and the ability to catch from your own vessel all viable options.

You can stargaze on the Great Barrier Reef at night Your day out on the waters of the Whitsundays doesn't have to end once the sun goes down - visitors can take advantage of the region's clear skies and join operator Cruise Whitsundays on their two day, one night Reef Sleep adventure on a pontoon at lovely Hardy Reef. It's become somewhat iconic of the region, as guests spend the day snorkelling or diving, then roll out a swag under the glow of the Milky Way of an evening as the ultimate capper.
• 10. ...and, oh yeah, the Great Barrier Reef itself is pretty spectacular Of course, much of the Whitsundays' appeal comes from its proximity to Australia's greatest natural wonder, and there are a multitude of ways to enjoy its many gorgeous offerings from a variety of angles.
