What you can expect
Follow the sparkling path of the Marama light trail in this one-hour self-guided night trail past active geysers and light shows. Just on the outskirts of Rotorua lies the geothermal valley of Te Puia where you will experience a magical 1.5km light trail guided by light and sound. Start your adventure at the colourful entry and let the interactive art and light installations guide your way. Every step brings new surprises, moving laser shapes, dazzling geyser eruptions, everything is meant to enhance the natural landscape and vegetation.
The soundscapes drawn from Te Puia itself woven together with original music from our own artists guides you from the festival-like entrance, past interactive artworks, and into the valley where ten unique scenes are brought to life in light. If you want to take a break, make a stop at the Terrace for a yummy treat or a warm drink before continuing to the incredible Pohutu Geyser. Watch as it shoots up water high into the air and the lights interact with it, creating a magical show of nature and art. Wander through the traditional Pikirangi Village and finish with the breathtaking glow of Te Ao Marama lighting up the valley. This family-friendly experience suitable for all ages is great to explore the natural wonders of the region in a new light.

What you need to know
- One-hour self-guided light trail journey
- September to April.
- Available daily, with gates open for four hours each evening
- Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start time
- 10 September to 30 November, starting from 7.30pm
- 1 December to 18 April, starting from 8.30pm
- Departures every 15 minutes
- Final entry is one hour before closing
- This experience is approximately one hour in duration.
- This experience departs from Te Puia, 20 Hemo Road, Whakarewarewa, Rotorua 3010.
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Warm, weather-appropriate clothing
- Camera
- Personal medication if needed
- Operates in all weather conditions
- Not suitable for wheelchairs or prams due to unpaved paths
- Participants must wear appropriate footwear and clothing
- Visual effects may cause discomfort for those with light sensitivity or motion sickness
- This is a seasonal experience, running from September to April
- Child rates apply for those aged five to 15 years
- Infants are free of charge
- Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
- Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
- Late arrivals or no-shows may result in you forfeiting your experience
