About Sydney Attractions

From the historic to the cutting-edge, and the natural to the man-made, Sydney's attractions are as wide and varied as the cityscape of Australia's largest city as a whole. As a result, every kind of traveller - whether it's a family visiting Sydney as a group, a culture-loving couple, or an adventurous solo visitor - will be able to find a Sydney attraction that piques their individual interest.

While its flagship attractions such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge remain wonderfully unique and obvious first points of call, they're only the tip of what Sydney has to offer. Perhaps the best part about many of Sydney's top attractions is that a large portion are clustered together within a relatively close distance; with Sydney Harbour's waterfront hub of Circular Quay and Darling Harbour serving as focal points, a number of these must-visit spots are all within walking distance of one another.

As a result, those looking to see its Harbour icons, get up close with Australian wildlife, take in incredible views of the city skyline and more will be able to satisfy their needs in an easy and convenient fashion. Those who are willing to travel a little further, meanwhile, will find that Sydney offers enough to keep visitors and locals alike entertained for literally weeks on end.

We highlight some of the most popular Sydney attractions - both paid and otherwise - in detail below, including an attractions map, information on getting to each, when to visit and much more below.

The Hop-on Hop-off cruise around the harbour will take you to see some of the city's best sights and locations such as the Opera House, Darling Harbour and Manly Beach - have your camera ready because you won't want to miss any of the great sights. For sweeping views of the Sydney CBD rise 250 metres above the crowds in the Sydney Tower Eye. Whether you're after some cute and cuddly companions, seeing some slithering mates or underwater residents, Sydney's various zoos, sanctuaries and aquariums. Taronga Zoo is one of the city's most popular wildlife parks with a large selection of animals roaming around spectacular views of the city as the backdrop a day at Taronga Zoo is not to be missed. Housing a range of native and exotic species, the zoo can be reached by ferry departing various points in the city including Darling Harbour and Circular Quay. Landmark Attractions

Region travel guides

With some of the most iconic landmarks in the country, a visit to Sydney isn't complete without ticking some its best sites off the list. First of all, the Sydney Opera House; you can take a cruise past it to admire the intricate wave design, attend a show inside or just simply stand in front of it - the choice is yours. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is another popular landmark with visitors given the chance to climb it at various times throughout the day for spectacular views over the city and its surrounds. Also, the Sydney Tower Eye is a popular destination for 360 degree views of the CBD, with visitors also given the chance to climb around the outside of it.

Tried and Tested

Sydney Attractions around Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour serves as one of the focal points for tourists first visiting Sydney, blending together a mix of family attractions, waterfront views, street entertainment, dining and iconic landmarks all in one central hub. Attractions-wise the area has plenty to offer both on the free and paid sides of the spectrum.

SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo offer the chance to get up close with Australian animal life on both sea and land, respectively, while Madame Tussauds Sydney is home to remarkably lifelike wax figures of some of the most famous faces from modern history and the present day. Each of these attractions sit right next to each other in a central complex on Darling Harbour, and as a result multi-attraction passes that provide entry to all three (as well as Sydney Tower Eye in the city centre) are an exceptionally popular way to keep the family entertained for a reasonable price.

Sydney Maritime Museum Attraction

Those in search of something a little more cultural can also have their needs met at Darling Harbour; the Australian National Maritime Museum sits right on the waterfront and is host to over 140,000 individual artefacts covering all-things-nautical, including six permanent galleries and 13 individual vessels from various historic time periods. The tranquil lakes and immaculately-groomed plant life of the Chinese Garden of Friendship also lie just a short 3 minute walk inland from Darling Harbour as well, for those looking for a dose of serenity within the urban landscape.

Lastly, while not an attraction in and of themselves, the majority of Sydney Harbour sightseeing and lunch cruises - as well as its convenient ferry service - depart from Darling Harbour or nearby Circular Quay as well, so if you're looking to take in other local highlights (such as popular family attraction Luna Park), you're only ever a short boat ride away here.

Sydney Attraction Pass options

While single entry to most Sydney attractions is obviously an option, many first-time visitors (or locals looking for a good deal) will instead opt for a multi-attraction or "combo" pass that provides admission to multiple attractions all-in-one.

These multi passes typically come in two main kinds:

  • Passes that are customisable, from which you can "pick your own" mix of Sydney attractions from a wider list. These have the benefit of only "getting what you pay for" as well as the ability to create an itinerary of your own choosing. Sometimes, you will have to pay a little bit extra for the privilege.

and;

  • Predetermined passes with a set package of attractions. These typically mix together two, three, four or five Sydney attractions that are pre-chosen in return for a discounted rate on entry price.
Sydney Attraction Multi Passes

Some of the most popular Sydney attraction passes include:

  • "Pick your own" Sydney Attractions Passes: choose anywhere from 2-5 attractions owned by Merlin Entertainments which are located around Sydney Harbour and the city. Buyers can choose from any mixture of SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary, Madame Tussauds Sydney, and Sydney Tower Eye. These rank among the most popular passes in Sydney, with each of their attractions centrally-located and of interest to families.
  • Taronga Zoo and Ferry Pass: Sydney's most popular wildlife attraction, Taronga Zoo sits right on the waterfront and is accessible via an efficient ferry system that includes Taronga as a key stop. A combined pass also includes 24 hours' worth of ferry access rather than just a single return ferry trip, allowing you to see a range of other Sydney attractions on the water within a 24 hour period.
  • 12 Months Unlimited Attractions Pass: more targeted at locals, this pass provides unlimited entry to 11 popular Merlin Entertainments attractions both within Sydney and some of its surrounding areas, as well as in Queensland and Victoria.
  • Sydney Flexi Attraction Pass: offering an expanded range of 20 attractions to choose from, including day tours and bus trips around the city in addition to entry to wildlife parks and other standard attractions. This is an ideal choice for first-time visitors to Australia, with the option to choose passes of either 3, 5 or 7 experiences in a single booking.
  • Sydney Super Saver Pass: offers entry to three of the most popular Sydney attractions (SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, and Sydney Tower Eye) as well as a 24 hour ferry pass for access to all of the greater Sydney Harbour area's highlights.

Savings from buying multi passes can add up quickly, particularly if you're visiting Sydney as a family, so be sure to check over each passes current inclusions to determine the best deal for you.

Sydney Attractions at Night

As light turn to dusk, while many of Sydney's attractions begin to shut down for the day there are still a number of excellent entertainment options for those seeking attractions at night. Other than the obvious options such as dining at a restaurant or even enjoying the night view of the Sydney Harbour waterfront, the following night attractions rank as must visits once sun has set:

  • Sydney Tower Dining and Buffet: one of Sydney's most unique dining experiences comes courtesy of Sydney Tower Eye's pair of dinner options that bring along with them the best possible views of the city's skyline. As Sydney's iconic viewing tower (and the tallest structure in the city), Sydney Tower Eye provides uninhibited 360 degree views of the city that extend out over the harbour, to the surrounding northern beaches and out to the Blue Mountains.
Those looking to dine here have two choices: Sydney Tower Buffet provides an all-you-can-eat budget option with a wide selection of dishes for a cheaper price, while its sister restaurant 360 Bar and Dining offers an a la carte menu featuring high-end seasonal dishes. Sydney Tower Eye's dinner sessions run from 5:00pm to 9:00pm for the final sitting.
  • Opera Shows at Sydney Opera House: more than just a wonderful example of architecture, the Sydney Opera House is home to numerous world-class opera and musical performances throughout the year. From traditional opera performances, to classical music, to dramatic theatre and contemporary groups and artists, there's a diverse range of shows clocking in at around 40 per week from which to choose. Night shows at the Opera House typically start around 7:30pm and run for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Q-Station Ghost Tours: The former first port of call for international immigrants looking to migrate to Australia, Sydney's Quarantine Station is a living relic of the past and excellent documentation of the trails and conditions that foreigners were exposed to. In the current era, at night the "Q-Station" becomes the site of adults-only ghost tours which take visitors behind-the-scenes to learn some of the harrowing stories about what occurred with some of the more infamous guests that passed through the station. Those with an interest in the paranormal can join a 2.5 hour guided ghost tour which starts at 8:00pm.
  • Luna Park: the long-running face of Sydney family entertainment, amusement park Luna Park offers its special blend of ride and sideshow-style entertainment extended into the evening on Friday and Saturday nights. Few such attractions can offer both high-octane fun as well as world-class views; those wanting a nighttime dose of Luna Park can attend up until 10pm during these night sessions.
  • Sydney Observatory night tours: gain an incredible insight into the wonders of the Milky Way on a night visit for one of Sydney Observatory's guided night tours that offer the chance to gaze through powerful telescopes at the night sky (weather permitting). These tours run for 2 hours in separate sessions at both 6:15pm and 8:15pm, with the earlier session intended for families.
