About Sunshine Coast Attractions

As a region, the Sunshine Coast punches above its weight in terms of both quality and quantity of attractions it offers the aspiring traveller. While it's not huge in terms of population, the Sunshine Coast has a mixture of attractions that are especially appealing to families, ranging from wildlife attractions to activity-based attractions both in and outdoors. As a result, the Sunshine Coast ranks as one of Australia's most family-friendly destinations, with its combination of wonderful weather and beaches intermingling nicely with these man-made highlights to make for some great variety between both free and paid experiences.

Spend one day relaxing on the beach or exploring the majestic Sunshine Coast Hinterland, then follow it up with a trip to the likes of Australia Zoo or UnderWater World, and you'll keep the little ones happy while enjoying the laid-back nature and unique offerings of the region's attractions yourself. We outline some of the Sunshine Coast's key attractions below.

Wildlife Attractions

Region travel guides
The Sunshine Coast's wildlife attractions are centered mainly around two individual offerings: Australia Zoo, and UnderWater World (SEA LIFE Mooloolaba). Australia Zoo sprang to fame largely through the exploits of the Irwin family highlighted by the late, great Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin who was a major figure in Australian wildlife promotion and preservation. While Steve passed away several years ago, his family and team of dedicated staff have carried on his efforts, and as a result Australia Zoo remains one of the country's premier wildlife attractions. Located at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast, there are few zoos in Australia that mix together animal shows and family entertainment as well as Australia Zoo. The zoo offers great animal diversity, encompassing not only Aussie favourites such as kangaroos, koalas, wombats and - of course - crocodiles amongst others, but also wonderful exhibits for international wildlife. UnderWater World, meanwhile, is a long-running aquarium/oceanarium that is highly entertaining and offers a better experience than other similar attractions in larger cities. Sitting on the water at Mooloolaba, UnderWater World offers some great interactive shows and talks, as well as a wonderful ocean tunnel for viewing sharks, rays and numerous fish from below. Passes are available that combine both of these attractions for a single reduced price, as well, making for a great animal-oriented itinerary.

Family Attractions

Region travel guides
In addition to its wildlife attractions, the Sunshine Coast offers a number of other fairly unique offerings for entertainment that those with kids in particular will get the most out of. High quality go-karting is provided courtesy of the Big Kart Track, the largest of its kind in the country and popular amongst older kids and kids-at-heart in particular. Drivers can choose between a number of different time lengths including 15, 30 and 60 minutes and then race to their heart's content. It's high-speed fun for those of at least 12 years of age. Aussie World is the Sunshine Coast's answer to a theme park, and while it's not as massive in scale as those on the Gold Coast it still offers some great rides and plenty of other sideshows to keep families occupied. Parents can appreciate its renowned Pub, which offers some quality lunch and dinner items as well. The Ginger Factory is another unique family attraction, oriented around all-things-ginger from dining to sampling to demonstrations, which are augmented by a number of small-scale rides and tours of the grounds. It's an amusing and distinct attraction that can't be found anywhere else in Australia. Top Shots Fun Park is another mini-amusement-park that is oriented around mini-golf but also has additional boat rides, slides and other entertainment on offer, while Bellingham Maze is a charming outdoor adventure that will put your memory to the test.
