No trip to Queenstown is complete without these must-do experiences. Make sure you see the highlights by adding these experiences to your itinerary.
Get a taste of the authentic Kiwi farming experience with this cruise and farm tour. Throwing you back in time, you'll cruise Lake Wakatipu on a vintage steamship before visiting the farm for a guided walking tour, where you’ll see sheep, deer and other animals. This outing includes a yummy traditional high country afternoon tea but if that doesn’t fill you up, there’s also a gourmet BBQ lunch available to purchase.
It isn't a trip to Queenstown without a visit to Onsen Hot Pools. A favourite for adults, kick back and relax in one of these picturesque pools as you enjoy postcard-worthy views of the Shotover River. Filled with pure water that works like magic on the body and mind, this therapeutic attraction is ideal for friends, families and couples looking to relax. Even better, your ticket includes a complimentary alcoholic drink and snack!
A Queenstown icon, the Shotover Jet experience is a must for anyone looking to get their fill of thrills. Jump on board ‘Big Red’ and hold tight as you fly past the cliff faces of the Shotover Canyon. The most fun you’ll have sightseeing, enjoy the views in between 360-degree spins, sweeping fishtails and other cool manoeuvres. Heads up, the wind-chill is real when you’re going that fast, so definitely dress for the conditions.
You can’t go to New Zealand and not hang out with the adorable kiwis! Located in the heart of Queenstown, the Kiwi Park is a hit for all ages. Your chance to get up close to the country’s most recognisable birds, reptiles and more, take your time to see the enclosures or check out one of the daily shows and presentations. If you want to see a kiwi in action, make sure you head to the Wildlife Theatre for the Kiwi Encounter.
Strapped for time but want to go check out the famous Milford Sound? Add this coach and cruise tour to your plans. Fitting in as much as you can, enjoy sightseeing from the road as you travel in a coach with giant windows and a glass roof before jumping on a scenic cruise. Seeing all the Sound has to offer, you’ll get to go up close to the cascading waterfalls and maybe even spot some of the wildlife. Heads up – cash isn’t accepted on board so make sure to bring your card to buy lunch.
A guaranteed good time, a quad bike tour through the backcountry of Queenstown is high up there. Taking you off the beaten track, follow your guide as they show you some of the best views around, giving you the best photo opportunities of Lake Wakatipu, the mountain ranges and more. Refreshments are included, but if you’re bringing any little ones along, it wouldn’t hurt to pack a few extra snacks.
Looking for something a little out of the ordinary? Queenstown is home to some hidden gems that are a little quirky but also a whole lotta fun.
If seeing snow is on your bucket-list, this helicopter ride is your best bet. Flying past glaciers, specky alpine scenery and more, you might get to see the real deal when you touch down on the snow-capped peaks. A 30-minute ride complete with commentary, it’s also an exciting way to also fit in some sightseeing if you’re tight on time. Just make sure to wear covered shoes, because snow on your toes isn’t nice (yep, even in summer!).
Want a big thrill? Queenstown hears ya’ loud and clear. Any dare devils in your group will be happy to know bungy jumping is on the menu. Ride the Skyline Gondola up to Bobs Peak and prepare yourself for the ultimate leap of faith. There’s also a viewing platform available for spectators, so anyone who isn’t game enough to jump can watch the action and still get to see the incredible views from up high.
Flying under the radar, parasailing is one of Queenstown’s lesser-known fun experiences. Giving you a whole new perspective of Lake Wakatipu, you’ll fly 200 metres up in the air, riding the wind and taking in the awesome views as the speed boat pulls you around. Going with a group? There’s a triple flight option for anyone going with mates or kids, just make sure everyone is 16 years or older.
