Highly recommended for young ones. As a young family, there was a lot of parking space which is a bonus when you have a young one. The walk around wasn't too tiring for them as well an the animals on display were definitely displayed well with easy visual access for my 2year old.
It was a nice place to visit

It was a nice place to visit. Although we would have liked a few more animals in the barn ( not just holding a chicken). Thought we would be able to touch koalas. Quite basic really. Paying extra for a park map is a bit silly. Whole experience only took an hour.

Really fantastic place

Really fantastic place! Even though it rained the entire time we were there it was still great, unfortunately not much is undercover so it’s best on a dry day. However, Experience OZ was very helpful when we had questions about the sanctuary and the time we’d need to see the whole place! 5 stars for customer service, thank you.

We had great family time at koala sanctuary
Raymond Chang 2 个月 前

We had great family time at koala sanctuary. We took a photo with a koala, pat kangaroo and feed them with our hands. It was a unique experience. We got to see so many animals. The bird show was amazing! Best of all, we got to see the platypus swimming around. Worth visiting.

We had a wonderful day

We had a wonderful day. Although our visit to Lone Pine Sanctuary was sticky. The grandsons loved seeing all their favourite animals: Flying foxes, wombats, snakes as well as the koalas. The Bird of Prey show was a highlight and we all enjoyed the information as well as the show. Lone Pine remains one of the highlights to a visit to Brisbane.

It was easy to purchase through this website. This is the first time I am using this website. They had PayPal as well. The discounted price gave me good savings especially since we were 3 people. If you are visiting as a huge family or travelling with friends, this saving is worthwhile.

A great place to connect with nature and animals

A great place to connect with nature and animals. Kangaroo feeding was awesome. Lots of Koalas to see and can take pics with them. Staff were really friendly and helpful. A variety of different birds. Great place for educating children on various animals and birds. Highly recommended.

The park is easy to get to via public transport
Claire Roberts 2 个月 前

The park is easy to get to via public transport, easy to get around and many animals to see/interact with. Well signed-posted to each area, we went in high season so a large queue for the food and drinks + the Koala cuddles but a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I think this experience was the best in Australia

I think this experience was the best in Australia, all the staffs were amazing and my mother enjoyed a lot. I bought the tickets from the Experience Oz website, it was perfect way to enjoy a lot. I got one picture with koala, it was perfect experience. Thank you!

Fun place to visit with a lot of experiences available like petting a Koala
Allan Rozario 3 个月 前

Fun place to visit with a lot of experiences available like petting a Koala, feeding Kangaroos. You can definitely spend the day here and you get to see loads of other animals. It's not as big as let's say Taronga Zoo and you don't have those many animals so it is a bit expensive in that sense, however, discounts through Experience Oz made it worthwhile.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Review

By Brittney Deguara

One of the most popular animal attractions in southeast Queensland and the largest koala sanctuary in the world, I visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on a beautiful Brisbane day to explore all it has to offer. Home to more than 100 koalas and various other native Australian animals, Lone Pine has grown over the years to become one of the must-do attractions for families, couples and solo travellers visiting Brisbane or passing through.

With my camera in hand and comfortable walking shoes on, I set off to explore the 30-hectare sanctuary and say hi to its 130 koalas and various other Australian animals. This is the ultimate Australian wildlife experience and as a Brisbane local, I was excited to explore this fantastic park located just outside of the city.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

How to get there

By Car: You can drive yourself to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and park for free at their onsite car park. The sanctuary is located around 15 minutes' drive from Brisbane CBD.

By Bus: You can hop on a public bus which will take you between Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and the city. Bus route 430 from Platform 2C at Queen Street Station and route 445 from Stop 40 on Adelaide Street both operate daily runs out to the sanctuary.

By Boat: Mirimar Cruises operates a scenic and relaxing cruise along the Brisbane River and docks at the sanctuary. The cruise departs the Cultural Centre Pontoon in Southbank at 10am daily and arrives around 11:15am, from the docking station there are approximately 28 steps to climb to reach the front entrance. The cruise departs the sanctuary at 2:15pm and returns back to Southbank by 3:30pm. The option exists for you to book a river cruise and sanctuary entry package.

Highlights

  • Around 130 koalas
  • The chance to cuddle a koala
  • Hand feed kangaroos and emus
  • Live animal presentations
  • Friendly keepers
  • On site cafe

What you'll do

Get ready to explore

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Upon arriving at the park we were handed a map to the grounds and given a friendly smile from passing staff as we set upon exploring the popular park. There was a sign at the entry notifying us of free Wi-Fi and an enlarged map for those who want to plan their day out ahead of time.

Surrounded by school groups, families, couples and tourists, animals were the main focus from the first step inside the park. The first animals we came across were friendly and talkative Cockatoos. Climbing their cage, as eager to look at us as we were them, the cockatoos set the mood for what was to be a cheerful day out.

As we wound around the corner we were greeted by the park's celebrities, koalas. With a tree full of retired koalas, adolescent koalas and everything in between, it was truly a koala heaven. Our early morning arrival didn't coincide with their sleeping schedule so they weren't overly active and we decided to give them a few moments to wake up and prepare for our second visit later in the day.

Cuddle a koala

Cuddle a koala lone pine koala sanctuary

Our first point of call was getting our hands on one of these cuddly creatures. Queensland is the only state in Australia that allows you to cuddle up to these adorable animals and doing so at the largest koala sanctuary in the world is a match made in heaven. The koala holding sessions run throughout the day, however, depending on the mood of the koalas, sessions vary from day to day.

Cuddling a koala is an additional experience that is available to purchase from the General Store within the park. There are various different packages to choose from with each varying in price. There is the photo only package for $20, the photo and A4 calendar package for $22, the Photo and three postcard package for $22 or the photo, A4 calendar and three postcards for $24. From here, we were issued a ticket to go line up and wait until it was our turn to cuddle.

While we waited we were told by the friendly staff to remove any sunglass from around our neck, take off our hats, backpacks and cameras and place them in the cubby holes provided, along with pushing any hair behind our shoulders. As we inched closer to the start of the line the excitement was building until it was my turn to step forward.

I was introduced to O'Malley by her keeper, told to hold my hands like a plank at hip height and stand tall and strong. O'Malley was sat on my hands and his paws rested on my shoulders before we turned to face the camera. The relaxed nature of O'Malley meant I wasn't struggling to hold him, though he was a little heavy, the keeper was on hand to help and grab O'Malley whenever I needed her to. The camera flashed and it didn't bother him, as we posed for some great photos to keep as a memento of my visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.

After handing O'Malley back to his awaiting keeper, we sanitised our hands with the station provided and made our way over to the General Store where our photos would be available to collect shortly after. We collected our photo package from the display case, purchased a $2 bag of kangaroo food and made our way over to the Kangaroo Reserve.

Feed the kangaroos

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

The kangaroo reserve is another one of Lone Pine’s main attractions and a fan favourite amongst international visitors and locals alike. A large, open-plan enclosure, you won't feel as though you're at an animal attraction once you step foot in here. While the kangaroos are spread out around the grounds relaxing in the shade, chasing down some food and having some alone time in the human-free enclosure in the corner, you'll still be able to pet, feed and photograph these Aussie icons to your heart’s content.

The kangaroos and wallabies range in size and love a good feed, so if you have purchased a bag of specialised food you'll be very popular in the Kangaroo Reserve. The relaxed nature of these kangaroos means you'll be able to sit with them, pet them and give them a scratch behind the ear, providing you with some amazing photo opportunities (which is exactly what we did!). We could have easily sat with the kangaroos all day, feeding them and watching them go about their day.

Despite the reserve's name, kangaroos aren't the only animals you'll find wandering around here. The Kangaroo Reserve is also home to emus, one of Australia's most iconic flightless birds. The emus enjoy stalking around, feeding from the food stations and are often still enough that you can snap a photo standing next to them.

The next stop on the agenda was a seat at the Free Flight Raptor Show.

Attend the Free Flight Raptor Show

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Free Flight Raptor Show

One of the most popular shows at the park, the Free Flight Raptor Show provides an excellent demonstration of some of the parks biggest, best and most intriguing raptors. With the help of experienced and knowledgeable keepers, we learnt about three of the park's best; the Peregrine Falcon, White-Bellied Sea Eagle, Black Kite and Barking Owl.

All visitors were asked to stay seated throughout the duration of the show for safety reasons, with the large raptors being allowed to fly between and around us, off any and all restraints. The first bird to fly in was the White-bellied sea eagle. The sheer size of the bird was incredible and the way it perched so elegantly on the keepers arm was something to admire. With subtle queues from sounds and food, the eagle flew around the area, always coming back to its perch on the log.

With three keepers in attendance, one commentating on the birds we were being introduced to, their feeding habits and fun little tid bits about them, the show was equally entertaining as it was exciting. The Barking Owl was a favourite of mine, as it showed off its impressive calling noise, mimicking the sound of a dog bark. From here, two of the keepers went to either side of the grandstand and signalled for the owl to swoop low overhead. This was an incredible experience that myself and the rest of the crowd loved!

At the end of the show, the three keepers carried the birds out to the side where we were able to talk to them about the raptors and snap some more great photos.

In addition to the Raptor show (held at 10:30am and 12:30pm), there are a number of other shows and demonstrations throughout the day, including a Wild Lorikeet Feeding (9:45am & 4pm), Barn Animal Encounter (10am), Sheep Dog Show (11am and 3:30pm), Koala Keeper Talk (11:30am and 2pm), Snake Photos (12pm), Snake Keeper Talk (1:30pm), Platypus Keeper Talk (2:30pm) and Tasmanian Devil Keeper Talk (3pm).

Grab a bite to eat

After watching all of the animals get fed, the hunger surely set in for us. The General Store is on hand to satisfy all your foodie needs, with a selection of delicious ready-to-eat food available to purchase. Alternatively, there are a range of seating areas scattered around the park and located next to the store where you can grab a seat to enjoy a BYO lunch.

We were able to enjoy our lunch sitting surrounded by koalas as they munched on eucalyptus leaves, climbed the tree and jumped from branch to branch, a truly incredible experience.

Say hello to the rest of the animals

Cassowary Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Lone Pine is home to a number of other Aussie favourites, including the adorable and shy platypus, two of the deadliest snakes in the world, the Inland Taipan and Eastern Brown Snake, a freshwater turtle, dingoes, Tasmanian devils, wombats and cassowaries.

Some of the stand out enclosures that I enjoyed were the Cassowary enclosure and wombat den. The chance to see the most dangerous bird in the world, the cassowary, up so close but still behind the safety of a fence, was amazing. Additionally, the wombat den gives you a look inside the burrow of these bulldozers, so even when he's sleeping during the day (wombats are nocturnal), you're still able to catch a glimpse of these large, powerful animals.

After a few last snaps of the adorable koalas, energised by their recent meal, the day had rounded out to a satisfying end.

My Recommendations

Kangaroo Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is a popular attraction for good reason, home to a collection of native Australian animals, this is the perfect introduction to Australian wildlife. Not just a tourist attraction, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is a great way to learn about various national animals, get up close to them, feed them and watch them go about their days in their replicated habitats.

As a Brisbane local, I had never held a koala before, nor visited Lone Pine, and the fact that it is so close to the city, very affordable and exciting to explore, makes me really wonder why I left it so long. This was an incredible experience for myself and from the squeals of excitement and giggles of the kids around the park, it seemed that they enjoyed themselves just as much.

Perfect for all ages and visitors from around the country, the world and even around Brisbane, the quantity of animals living at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary will make you feel as though you're roaming through their natural habitat instead of a 30-hectare sanctuary on the outskirts of the Queensland capital.

The keepers who work at the park are incredibly friendly and available to answer any questions you may have about their animals, which works perfectly for the inquisitive little minds of kids. Providing visitors with an affordable and easily accessible way to get hands-on and up-close to some of Australia's most famous animals, including kangaroos, koalas and emus, you'll snap some great photos and make some amazing memories.

Located close to Brisbane CBD, Lone Pine is incredibly easy to visit and explore, and with the option of combining entry with a scenic river cruise departing Southbank with Mirimar Cruises, you can conveniently combine your visit with sightseeing around Brisbane.
