What you can expect
No humans were harmed in the making of this workshop! Learn the art of crafting convincing special effects by mixing blood and sculpting your own scars and scrapes at our ‘Intro to Special Effects’ workshop. Begin your journey as a special effects makeup artist: In this introductory workshop, you will learn how to make fake blood, apply a custom fake wound to yourself using silicon and paint it to look like the real thing.
Step into the world of a practical effects artist and bring spine-chilling scenes to life at our Intro to Scars and Scrapes workshop.
Ever wondered how special effects artists make monstrous wounds look so ghastly, or make movie blood look terrifyingly like the real thing? Our Wētā Workshop Unleashed crew will guide you through the craft, teaching beginner tricks to create shockingly realistic prosthetics that will leave family and friends horrified!
Inspired by scenes from the faux horror movie Fauna, you’ll mix your own fake blood and learn how to sculpt, layer and colour a prosthetic to make it look blood-curdlingly real. With all materials provided and small class sizes, this hands-on workshop promises plenty of frightful fun as you master the art of basic special effects. Join us and create something that’s sure to get a scream!
Upon competition of the workshop, you’ll receive a Certificate of Creativity.
No creative experience is necessary.

What you need to know
- 60 minute interactive workshop making realistic prosthetic effects
- This experience departs at 3:50pm, 7 days a week (additional 12:50pm departure every Saturday)
- This experience is 90 minutes in duration
- Please arrive 15 minutes before your booking time
- Closed Christmas Day
- This experience is located on level 5 at 88 Federal St, Auckland (opposite the Sky Tower)
- Minimum age is 12yrs
- Photography is welcomed, but videography is not allowed
- Wētā Workshop Unleashed is located on level 5 at 88 Federal St, Auckland (opposite the Sky Tower). We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your booked time - there is lots to explore on the 5th floor
- We are a quick 10-minute walk from Britomart, Auckland’s central bus and train station, and the Intercity bus terminal is right on our doorstep. For public transport, please refer to the AT website
- Auckland Explore Bus: You can also jump on the Auckland Explore Bus, where you can hop on and hop-off at some of the city's biggest attractions, including Wētā Workshop Unleashed, as part of the available pass. Check out their website here for details
- Carparking is available at the SkyCity Main Site. This is Auckland's biggest car park, boasting 1,960 parks accessible from three entries, full-time security and surveillance, and well-lit maintained facilities

- Please allow up to 48 hours for a response. If cancellation is made within 24 hours of arrival, there is no refund available
- If cancellation is made within 48 hours of arrival, we will refund 50% of the total booking price
- If a tour is cancelled by Weta Workshop, we can reschedule your tour to another day that suits you or offer a full refund
