Great value for money! The breakfast was buffet style and was very yummy, staff friendly, you get a photo taken by them free of charged included in the price as well as private (small group) tour around the park before it opens. If you’re in Sydney I recommend doing this.

I really enjoyed this

I really enjoyed this! It was cool to get a personal tour around the zoo with one of the zoo keepers, the girl we had was really nice and knew pretty much all there is to know about the animals - very impressive. We got to pat a kangaroo and see all of the animals waking up and getting ready for the day. The tour group was quite small so it was nice and personalised. The actual breakfast with the koalas wasn't as predominant as I thought it would be, we ate a hot breakfast buffet (which was yum) and then after we had our photo taken next to the koala. The photo was free which is a plus because zoos usually charge through the nose. Ideally it would have been cool to hold or pat the koalas but you can't do that any where but QLD. Overall it was a really enjoyable day.

I did this on a Sunday morning and it was good

I did this on a Sunday morning and it was good. Your morning starts with a personalised tour around the Zoo before opening hours. We had about 10 - 12 in our group so it was intimate enough that we could all receive special treatment. The worker who showed us around was very friendly and knowledgeable and made the experience a lot more fun sharing with us lots of information I didn't know before. Once discovering all the animals we stopped at the Kangaroo area where we had the chance to get up close with these animals and have a little play. Following this, we proceeded to breakfast. The food was a buffet breakfast complete with eggs, bacon, baked beans, hash browns and more. There was plenty to ensure no one walks away hungry however don't expect anything special. Following your breakfast, everyone has the chance to have their photo taken with a koala. Unfortunately, in NSW, you can't cuddle these animals, so standing next to it was our only option. I think it would be better for them to really specify this as I was expecting to hold it. After your photo is taken, your tour is over however you have the freedom to go back and explore more of the zoo if you wish (still before it has even opened). Your koala photo is free which is great. Our group had a mixture of families, as well as adults and everyone seemed to enjoy it. It was quite short for the price, however.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Koala Breakfast

Brittney Deguara

Experience Oz Travel Writer

If you ask a tourist to name an Australian animal it is almost guaranteed that their top (if not second) answer is going to be a koala, koala bear or, as they’re sometimes known, a drop bear. The image of koalas clinging to eucalyptus trees and cuddling up to their carers makes people “ooh” an “ahh” at these adorable yet feisty animals.

So when I was given the chance to visit the koalas at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo all while enjoying a delicious hot breakfast, we surely didn’t turn down the offer.

  • Intimate tour of the zoo
  • Entry before the park opens to the public
  • Having breakfast with the koalas
  • Feeding and patting wallabies
  • Variety of Australian animals
  • Informative commentary

What You'll Do

Entry to the Park

With an early start on a cold May morning, we waited outside of the closed attraction doors as our fellow tourists slowly trickled in from all directions. We totalled a number 10, an intimate number that was set to make this experience as personal and enjoyable as can be.

Greeted by one of the staff members we checked in and placed our hot drink order – the drink of choice today was a hot chocolate.

After a short briefing from our tour guide for the morning we were led into the zoo to explore. Out first stop was to see some of the slithering house guests; the snakes.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Koala Breakfast Snakes

Draped over branches and tree stumps the snakes looked seemingly harmless as they snoozed through their alarms; us, but we Aussies new better than to trust native Australian snakes even the beautifully coloured Green Tree Python.

Butterfly Tropics

As we left the main entrance we were quickly transported into Tropical North Queensland as the temperature and humidity rose upon entering the butterfly sanctuary. The Butterfly Tropics is a controlled habitat catering for a range of animals that like many of us prefer the warmer seasons.

Being held at a temperature of 33 degrees Celsius, the Butterfly Tropics is home to as you would expect, a variety of butterflies who if they wish to, will pull up a chair on your head, shoulder or arm, a range of native Australian frogs including the aptly named Green Tree Frog, and the aforementioned Green Tree Python – and no, the two are not friendly relations.

Wondering around the path you will also see multiple kinds of turtles including the Krefft’s River and Northern Long-necked as well as the Plumed Whistling Dock.

Wallaby Cliffs

The next stop was the Wallaby Cliffs, a lucky dip of Australian animals if you may. With a rugged, outback designed environment the, you just knew the animals that live here have that Outback Australian blood running through their veins.

This area is home to the no so little wombat, Ringo, Bluey the Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby, two jolly kookaburras, a family of blotched blue tongue lizards and one of Australia’s favourite animals to take a selfie with; a quokka named Stewie.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Koala Breakfast Wombats

Upon walking around the corner we were greeted by a very energetic and excited Ringo. As he quickly paced up and down the enclosure the entire group was as excited to see him as he was us. However, we quickly learnt that it wasn’t us he was happy to see; it was his wheelbarrow full of food.

We decided the leave Ringo to devour his meal and the rest of the gang sleep in the dark caves and on the cliffs.

Daintree Rainforest

As we walked to the next enclosure it was evident we had once again been transported north as we found ourselves immersed in a replication of the luscious Daintree Rainforest.

Home to another collection of Aussie animals, we were quickly put into order by the assertively curious male cassowary named Princess. Named for his diva demands and troublesome demeanour, Princess is as fussy and feisty as cassowaries come.

Don’t let his bright colours and name fool you, cassowaries are armed with powerful weapons; a large, sharp claw on his inner toe and striking kick to match – it’s no wonder cassowaries are known as the ‘World’s Deadliest Bird’.

If you can get your eyes off Princess you’ll also spot some of the Daintree’s other residents including the carpet python, pademelons, Boyd’s forest dragon and a broad-shelled river turtle to name just a few.

In addition to the native animals, the native plants are also something to admire as the Daintree Rainforest in Far North Queensland is protected for its flora and fauna.

Kangaroo Walk About

Our next point of call was entering the Kangaroo Walk-About to, as the name suggests, walk around the kangaroo habitat.

The enclosure is home to a bevvy of animals including the obvious Eastern grey kangaroos and agile wallabies as well as some cute quokkas, prickly echidnas and princess parrots.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Koala Breakfast

As we were the only visitors in the zoo we were free to enjoy this proximity without the crowds. One of the keepers in the enclosure enticed two of the wallabies with a whole lot of delicious grass, all so that they would come and mingle with us.

After a few pats and cuddles of the seemingly ignorant and incredibly hungry wallabies we were led out of the enclosure.

Devil’s Den

Walking past the seemingly empty Devil’s Den we were told that it was home to two scavenging predators, Topsy and Bub the Tasmanian Devils.

With a stern warning not to hang any limbs over the edge of the barrier, we waited patiently for either of the superstars to show their faces, however, we were let down this time, it seems our visit was not during operating hours.

Koala Rooftop & Breakfast

After our mini expedition through the zoo we arrived at our destination; Koala Rooftop, to our awaiting hot beverage and cuddly friends. It was here we pulled up a seat and helped ourselves to the steaming hot buffet that awaited us.

Complete with bacon, eggs, hash browns and English muffins, it seemed as though we definitely weren’t leaving here hungry.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Koala Breakfast

Looking over the Kangaroo Walk-About, the café area was flanked by two koala enclosures and as we enjoyed our breakfast so did the koalas perched in the eucalyptus trees.

As our group began the photo shoot with the koalas and slowly dwindled, in no time we were left with the place to ourselves. Just the koalas, and us, it was time for our five minutes of fame.

Unlike the cushy and cuddly life koalas in Queensland live, the marsupials cared for outside of the sunny state aren’t to be handled by the public so this was a see but don’t touch kind of experience.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Koala Breakfast

After our visit with the koalas, which seemed to care more about their food and sleeping than smiling for our photo, we were left to roam the zoo for a short amount of time before it was opened to the public for the day.

This meant we could go back and see some our favourite animals for one last hooray without the hustle and bustle of daily zoo life.

We made a b-line for the Kangaroo Walk-About to get up close with these cute jumpers and then on to the Devil’s Den hoping to catch a glimpse of these Devils.

As soon as we got there it was evident the Devils were awake and well as one of them kept running rings around his enclosure stopping only to smell the foreigners (us) and observe his surroundings.

Though they might look cute, these animals are nothing but with a ferocious bite and growl you don’t want to get on the bad side of one of these animals.
