It was wonderful because we met wild animals and visited the beautiful cave. The driver was so nice and interesting person. Unfortunately, the weather was not really good but my friend and I were enjoyed. The meeting time is early but we could sleep well on the bus.
Coach pick up was fine
Alice Lai 6 months ago

Coach pick up was fine. I had forgotten to reconfirm my booking but managed to do that in the morning and spoke to a courteous lady on the phone who also confirmed the location of the coach. Unfortunately, due to the weather condition, wet and misty, we were not able to see much of the surrounding at the 3 sisters. The cave was nice and the driver/guide was knowledgeable.

We took the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves Tour from Sydney
Carolyn Chen 9 months ago

We took the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves Tour from Sydney. The whole trip was awesome! Staff and driver are professional and willing to fit your needs. We had lots of fun at the Jenolan caves tour. The guided tour is for the Lucas cave. Lot's of stairs to climb up and down the cave route. Recommend for older kids. We also saw wild koalas and wallabies on our way to and from Jenolan Caves. The driver is willing to stop and let us off the bus to see the wild wallabies. The bus is clean and new. The driver is so professional that his skills to pass all the narrow turns was awesome. On the way back to Sydney, the driver could drop you off at your designated hotels or location. It was a fun trip! Highly recommended.

We had a great day the tour guide Henry was informative

We had a great day the tour guide Henry was informative. Traffic was a nightmare though and the tour was advertised as blue mountains and Jenolan caves but when we were picked up it was Jenolan caves we were asked if we were going to I wasn't the only one who was confused it would be better to go to Blue mountains separately to really enjoy the experience

My husband and I wanted to do something different for our honeymoon
Suat Cheng Lee 2 years ago

My husband and I wanted to do something different for our honeymoon. This trip to the famed Blue Mountains and Jenolan cave along the way is indeed something interesting that caught our eye. Henry, the guide from AAT Kings tour picked us near our hotel early in the morning with a big and comfortable tour coach bus. We reached the beautiful Leura garden village after a 1.5 hour drive from Sydney for a 45 minute break. We had a satisfying breakfast at Loaves & the Dishes which was highly recommended by Henry. Here people can also grab some lunch for later on, as there are some other cafes and a Woolworths. Up in the Blue Mountains the view is breathtaking. Had some photos at the lookout points. The blue haze created are actually from oils that evaporates into the air from the Eucalyptus trees. Henry was such a good driver maneuvering the narrow mountain paths. We then waited by the Blue Lake just beside Jenolan caves entrance hopeful to sight platypus. The 90 min Lucas cave tour was scheduled half an hour later so we have some time to explore the area. We actually had to climb 910 steps in total, through various chambers including a Cathedral chamber which can hold weddings boasting its perfect acoustics. The cave formation and stalactites are indeed spectacular work. Our group were also lucky to be able to feed carrots to a wild wallaby which Henry has named her Matilda! A really awesome and fun day tour which I highly recommend to everyone seeking adventure in nature.

Had a wonderful tour guide named john

Had a wonderful tour guide named john! He really put all his effort into being accommodating from dealing with my big bags to dropping me off out of his way! Great tour only recommendation would be less time at the first pit stop! Awesome nonetheless :)

The Blue Mountains was a beautiful as I expected it to be but I didn't think we spent nearly enough time there
Brittney 3 years ago

The Blue Mountains was a beautiful as I expected it to be but I didn't think we spent nearly enough time there. We stopped in the quaint town of Leura for refreshments but I think that could have either been cut out or shortened because then we were only given 15 minutes at Echo Point Lookout to see the Three Sisters Rock formation (which I was really looking forward to). The Jenolan Caves were cool but again, feel as though our time there could have been shortened. Overall it was a good day (very long) and our driver was very friendly and informative. The drive itself was scenic and it was nice to be able to relax comfortably in the bus. Pack your walking shoes and bring food and drink.

This is a good way to get to the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves without having to worry about driving yourself
Kenzi 3 years ago

This is a good way to get to the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves without having to worry about driving yourself. The bus is very modern and comfortable, with plenty of room to ensure you aren't squished for the long drive. We left Sydney at approximately 9.30 which I found quite late as it really limited the amount of time we had to spend at the mountains. The first stop after a 1.5 hour drive was the town Leura for a 45 minute break. Here you can grab some lunch for later on, with some cafes and a Woolworths. I found this stop a bit long as it resulted in us only have 15 minutes to spend at Echo Point (home of the Three Sisters etc). Next stop was Echo Point for a VERY quick chance to enjoy the great views of the Blue Mountains - the views were magical! Back on the bus for a 2 hour drive to Jenolan Caves. Once at Jenolan Caves we had 30 minutes to walk around blue lake before a 90 minute Jenolan Caves tour. The tour guide was great and very informative, however by the end I found the tour very long - unfortunately the caves don't look much different from each other. The group was also quite large resulting in us not all being able to fit on the platforms at times. Back on board the bus, we started the journey back to Sydney arriving back at around 6.30. All in all, it's a good way to get to the Blue Mountains, however i think some improvements need to be made to the itinerary to make this GREAT. Our bus driver was awesome and very entertaining. This is a very long day however, so probably not ideal for young children.

The tour was excellent
Kaavya 3 years ago

The tour was excellent. It started at 8am for pickup from our hotel in Sydney. There are 5 pickup locations. Then we drove 1.5 hours to blue mountains. Our driver David was excellent and spent the drive telling us about the history and culture of Sydney and also pointed out the various landmarks. Once st blue mountains we stopped twice at two different locations to take in the views and to take photos. Then we drove 1.5 hours to Jenolan caves. The drive was very fun since we were driving through a wildlife sanctuary/park and we saw wallabies. Once we for to jenolan caves we have 30 mins to walk around and check out the beautiful blue lake. Then we had a90 min walking tour of the caves. Our guide was very nice and informative and gave us plenty of time to take photos and ask questions. After the cave tour we had a3 hour drive back to Sydney. I recommend you eat breakfast or bring breakfast and bring money to buy lunch at one of the stops or bring your own lunch. There is water available at the different stops. We loved this experience and we would recommend it to our friends.

The tour of the caves is good but the groups can get quite big and make it hard to hear the tour guides unless you get to the front

AAT Kings is one of Australia's longest-running and most respected tour companies, having been offering guided tours across Australia for nearly 100 years..

While it's possible to drive to both of these locations, it's a 5+ hour round trip from Sydney on some winding road; tour operators know these roads perfectly allowing you to relax and take in the views. Also, the Jenolan Caves are a constant 15 degrees Celsius all year – perfect for walking even in summer!

Blue Mountains & Jenolan Caves Day Tour Review

Brittney Deguara

Experience Oz Travel Writer

Sydney is surrounded by so much natural beauty that venturing out of the city is a definite must. With this full day tour from Sydney CBD we were taken deep into the Blue Mountains - one of Sydney's most iconic natural regions - and its signature network of Jenolan Caves for a full day of exploration and incredible sights.

Highlights

  • Scenic bus ride
  • Visiting the Three Sisters, Echo Point
  • Exploring Jenolan Caves
  • Informative Tour
  • Exciting day tour

What you'll do

Depart Sydney

With an 8:10am departure from Four Points Sheraton in the city we gathered at the entrance before being greeted by our transfer host. After the group was assembled we were led to the waiting mini bus to be transferred to our coach. AAT Kings has a range of pick up locations* around the city including the Four Seasons, Hilton Hotel, ParkRoyal Darling Harbour, Rydges and Sofitel Wentworth. The company offers the hotel pick-ups complimentary, which was great in our circumstances as we didn’t have our own transport in Sydney.

Upon arriving at the departure point we were greeted by our friendly tour guide/driver before boarding our already full coach. With a full bus of keen travellers we began our journey towards the Blue Mountains. Travelling over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and heading out of the city we were treated to beautiful views of the harbour and the surrounding suburbs. The long journey was made comfortable with the air-conditioned coach and commentary from our driver/guide.

Wander around Leura

We reached our first stop within an hour and a half and upon arriving in Leura we were greeted with chilling weather. We were then given up to 45 minutes to explore the quaint town and in that time we could browse the vintage shops, dine for lunch at a local café or purchase some snacks for the road ahead from Woolworths. This stop over could have been shortened as Leura is not that big and if you do not want to have lunch there is a fair bit of waiting around before re-boarding the bus.

Admire the Three Sisters

The next stop on the agenda was Katoomba and the famous Echo Point Lookout to admire the Three Sisters rock formation. Unfortunately this was only a quick stop with a total of 15 minutes allocated to jump off the bus, walk the short distance to the lookout, snap some photos and get back on the bus. This was the most popular stop of the day with hoards of people gathering for the perfect photo of the Three Sisters and the surrounding Blue Mountains area.

Three Sisters Blue Mountains

Echo Point Lookout has two platforms to admire the formations as well as binoculars and railings for your safety. Easily one of the most popular attractions in the Blue Mountains, Echo Point and the surrounding township of Katoomba is where all of the action happens. Katoomba is a small town with a number of eateries, pubs and shops as well as the popular tourist attraction, Scenic World. This tour didn’t include access to Scenic World or the chance to explore Katoomba, but if you’re given the chance it comes highly recommended.

Explore the Jenolan Caves

From here we began our journey to the Jenolan Caves, which are located just over an hours drive from Katoomba. The journey there was incredibly scenic and at times a little terrifying as the road; Cliff Drive, journeys along the cliff's edge with nothing but a vegetative drop.

Thanks to our experienced driver we were delivered safely and soundly to the caves in time for our tours. Three people on our tour were signed on for a canyoning adventure through the caves, which departed around half an hour earlier than ours. We were left to explore the small area and relax before meeting up at the entrance of the cave to begin our journey inside

Jenolan Caves Tour

Upon meeting the extended tour group made up of travellers from around the world, we were issued our passes from our new guide and briefed on the tour. We were asked not to touch any of the rocks or walls inside the cave as the oils off our skin can be quite damaging to these historic caves. Luckily we were warned that there was a reasonable amount of stairs to climb up and down on this tour through the Lucas Cave, so we were wearing our running shoes.

Be sure to wear warm comfortable clothing as well but be prepared to peel layers off as you venture through the caves. The Jenolan Caves stretch along 40 km of multi-level passageways and are the oldest known open caves in the world. With all of the caves that have already been discovered, there are people still working to uncover new passages.

Out of the nine caves open to the public we were set to explore the Lucas Cave, which is the most visited cave and home to some popular formations including the Cathedral room. There were various stops along the way to admire the cave’s main highlights, learn about the rocks and what life was like for explorers many years ago. The various stops acted as the perfect resting point between climbs, however, there was no seating and it was evident some of the tour members were struggling a little.

With lights set up throughout the entire cave we were never left in the dark, except for when our guide turned them off to show us what the caves are really like. Now fitted with white lights, the cave was once filled with multi-coloured lighting giving it a trendy, disco feel. A small section of these lights are still installed in the cave and make for the great ending to this tour.

There were toilets and a shop located at area around caves and after finishing the tour we were given some time to organise ourselves before re-boarding the bus for the return trip back to Sydney.

Journey back to Sydney

The return journey was set to last just under 3 hours and as the day was nearing an end the entire bus was relatively tired. With the cabin dimmed and sunset, we were closing in on our destination. Our visit to Sydney coincided with that of the famous Vivid Festival, which lights up the city. Upon our arrival into Sydney, we were treated to amazing views of the Opera House in full glow, making this the perfect ending to a great day.

How to get there

The tour bus does pick ups and drop offs froma number of hotels in Sydney CBD

What to Bring

  • Food: snacks and lunch
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Water
  • Camera
  • iPod, books, magazines to keep you occupied on the drive

Summary

Overall this was an enjoyable day tour, however, it would have been great to have more time at Echo Point Lookout and Katoomba to explore Scenic World. If you’re looking for a tour that encompasses the Blue Mountains and the neighbouring Jenolan Caves in a swift day package, then this is the option for you.
