Jump Styles

  • Flips - Fancy showing off your athletic prowess? You've got three options: forwards, backwards or gainers. Tumble your way through freefall before swinging out down in the canyon below. Try to beat the record: 10 forwards flis by flipping Philip!
  • The Chair - You've been told that rocking back on your chair is bad, well in swing world it's GREAT. We'll sit you in our chair then position you backwards on the edge. It's up to you to play with gravity, slowly pass through the point of no return and enjoy. Seatbelt provided The Tandem Chair - We're delighted to bring you the latest addition to our jumpstyle collection - The Tandem Chair! The World Famous 'Chair' is now double the fun as you can now do it tandem!
  • The Cutaway - Our easiest launch by far. We will suspend you out over the canyon in a sitting position which you will remain in for the whole of your swing. If you're tough enough you can release yourself or leave it to us. You can just sit back and enjoy the ride
  • Backwards - Standing with your heels over the edge of the platform. Hands behind your head and slowly fall back into the canyon below. The view of the platform rocketing away from you is truly freaky. Great option for experienced jumpers
  • Gimp Boy Goes to Hollywood - We'll suspend you upside down over the canyon, staring directly at the canyon floor, arching your back and reaching for the river below. Keep your eyes open and wait to be released, you'll swoop down towards the river - eyeballs first
  • Forwards - Standing on the edge looking down if you dare, then step, jump, fall, dive or leap any which way to begin your spectacular descent. You're free to scream, flap your arms and kick your legs as you accelerate into the canyon. Jumping off yourself is an amazing achievement

Mich 2 years ago Biggest Adrenaline rush ever! Be warned of the crew there as they trick you - you think they are letting go of the rope and often they dont! I loved the banter!! Ive done Bungy before and enjoyed this more as you kind of get two experiences in one - a bungy and then a swing! Also swinging over the canyon is unreal!!!

Shotover Canyon Swing Review

Mackenzie Burr

Experience Oz Travel Writer

Queenstown has built a reputation for being one of the world’s most extreme towns, creating a haven for thrill-seekers and daredevils the world over.

It comes as no surprise then, that the team at Shotover Canyon Swing don’t offer a peaceful swing from comfortable heights, perfect for travelling grandparents and your little sister who's afraid of the slide at your local playground.

Instead, Shotover Canyon offers the chance to free-fall 60-metres from a ledge, positioned at 109 metres above the ground, which includes swinging on a 200-metre arc through one of Queenstown’s most famous Canyons.

How to get there

Via Courtesy Coach: Shotover Canyon provides a courtesy shuttle from Shotover Street in Queenstown, about 90 metres down the road from the i-Site. You can also organise a pickup from the Shotover Jet on Gorge Road.

Highlights

  • Entertaining and friendly Staff
  • Highest Cliff Jump in the World
  • Awesome views
  • Being able to pick your own jump style

What you’ll do

Enjoy an anxious wait

The experience truly starts when you first arrive at your pick-up spot.

If you’re like me and you would typically avoid falling from high places in your day-to-day life, the reality of what you’re about to do will only now start to set in. This is when the fidgeting and twitching starts.

Every nervous tick your body knows will be in full swing, magnified by each passing second as you wait for a bus you secretly hope will never turn up.

Meet your friendly Bus Driver

When your bus finally does arrive, you’ll get to meet your first member of the Shotover Canyon family, the bus driver.

Our bus driver was an unnaturally relaxed fellow, which made for a stark contrast to how we were feeling. During the drive up we were shown a video of the various jump styles available including the tricycle, the chair, bin Laden, and gimp boy goes to Hollywood to name a few.

The video also included some particularly tormenting experiences for previous customers, some of whom were quite humorous and we even managed to get a few nervous laughs out to break the tension.

Pick your poison

IMAGE

Once you’ve arrived on site, your bus driver will usher you into the waiting area, which features some pretty spectacular views of the canyon you will soon be swinging through.

Here, you can also flick through the Shotover Canyon’s fantastic and terrifying menu. The menu features an ‘underpants’ rating system where 5 underpants represents the most intense style.

We decided on ‘Gimp Boy Goes to Hollywood’ after being convinced by staff members that this was the best tandem jump style available (the fact that it was also a 5-underpant-rating jump reserved for thrill-seeking madmen didn’t seem to get a mention).

The tandem Gimp Boy Goes To Hollywood involves being suspended upside down over the canyon, staring directly at the jagged rocks below and falling “eyeballs first” with your arms out in front of you accompanied by plenty of screaming.

The nervous wait number 2

With a jump style selected, all that was left to do was watch and wait as the previous group of jumpers went through their pre-selected styles one at a time, with video footage feeding directly to the computers in our waiting room for added anxiety.

We learnt from the videos that there wouldn’t be any comforting stories or hand holding coming from staff members during the jump, who were a jovial bunch. Having said that, my jump partner was particularly terrified and they were quick to notice, instead directing most of their torment to me (great bunch of guys, they were).

Get your gear on and take a deep breath

IMAGE

Once the previous group had each finished their swing, and the screams that echoed through the canyon had finally subsided, we were welcomed to waddle down some narrow stairs to a daunting perch, which protruded uncomfortably out from the cliff’s face.

The first stage was getting suited up with all the essentials. Your getup will vary depending on whether you intend to jump solo or with a friend, and the staff are well versed in making sure you’ve got everything buckled up just right (although, they will almost certainly tell at least one of you that your equipment is old, accompanied by a very concerned look).

Driven predominantly by our desire to get it over with, we were the first to volunteer as tributes in our group of six. We confirmed our jump style with staff at the end of the platform, who would then be responsible for setting us up to fall moments later.

1, 2, 3, Jump!

IMAGE

Gimp boy goes to Hollywood included firstly sitting back in our harnesses, before being slowly swung out over the sheer drop below. At this stage, I was feeling quite calm, almost excited, as I looked up to a strong harness and blue skies above. It wasn’t until we were asked to lift our legs, arch our backs, and look straight down to the rocks below that I felt a sudden shift in emotions, as we slowly put our arms out in front of us like Superman pre take off (if Superman was afraid of taking off).

While staring at the canyons daunting gulley, I could feel my excitement being rapidly replaced by the realisation that I was about to be plummeting towards a completely un-cushioned rocky canyon. We were also offered no control over when the pin would be released and the swing would begin, which added to the paralysing sense of anticipation.

With a faint click and devious chuckle, we felt our weight suddenly leave our bodies as we begun to free-fall down the side of the cliff towards the canyon floor. My swing buddy filled the air with a scream that adequately depicted her genuine fear of dying, while I managed to awkwardly laugh through my tears in a mixture of thrill and terror.

Once the harness began to take our weight and we started swinging out across the width of the canyon, a rush of genuine excitement and disbelief came over us and we couldn’t help but yell out, high five, and laugh it off.

After wiping away tears and embracing the genuinely exhilarating feeling of falling followed by an intense amount of relief, the Shotover Canyon staff began to winch us back up to the platform, providing some breath-taking views along the way.

What’s included

  • Transport to and from the experience, leaving from Shotover Street in Queenstown or the Shotover Jet off Gorge Road
  • Equipment for the jump, including helmets and harnesses

What to bring

  • Warm clothing (depending on the weather)
  • Wallet/Purse if you’d like to purchase photos, videos or merchandise
  • Go-Pro (optional)
  • Bucket loads of confidence!

My recommendations

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one that I’ll never forget. Despite all the nerves, swinging through Shotover Canyon is quite possibly the most memorable man-made attraction I’ve visited in New Zealand.

The team at Shotover Canyon Swing couldn’t have been better, from bus driver through to jump staff, every member of the team were as funny as they were fearless, which made for a truly memorable day facing our own fears in New Zealand’s thrill-seeking capital, Queenstown.
