In terms of Australian historic hubs, few parts of the country have had such a wide-reaching influence on the growth and development of Australia as a whole than the Murray Region. The lifeblood for many outback towns - many of which date back over 150 years - the waterway serves as an ever-present backdrop to an extensive range of excellent historic attractions, cruises, charming townships and much more.
Why it's special: Based around the hub of Australia's most important waterway; lovely mixture of scenery, camping spots, and historic heritage
Best time to go: Spring / Autumn
The waterway upon the back of which much of a burgeoning nation was built, the Murray River is an iconic Australian destination that conjures up imagery of banks adorned with hanging rivergums, the leisurely motion of paddlesteamers, deep greens juxtaposed with fiery reds, and regional towns in which horse-drawn carriages transport both cargo and passengers between its historic buildings.
In the present day, elements of this past definitely remain, however, the region has been augmented with a number of more modern attractions, amenities and the growth of its towns to provide visitors with both extra entertainment options and additional conveniences to help augment travels here.
It's the blend of both raw Aussie nature and the elements of history that draw most visitors to the Murray, and both of these are present in such a diverse variety of ways that the sheer number of things to do and places to visit is extensive. As a result, those looking to get away from urban life will have plenty to keep them occupied.
Cruising is perhaps its most obvious activity, with the far-ranging length of the waterway offering the chance to get out and explore its scenery on the water both aboard modern vessels, or following in the footsteps of frontier riverboat pilots and boarding an authentic paddle steamer.

The Murray is largely an aquatic-oriented destination in total, and other water activities such as fishing, waterskiing, canoeing and kayaking are also highly popular here. Stick to dry land, however, and the Murray region is far from limited; it's one of Australia's premier hotspots for escapist camping and off-the-beaten-track exploration, it's home to some gorgeous and wildlife-rich wetlands, and it's rich in indigenous history dating back far further into the past.
Each of its individual towns, meanwhile, offer a different aspect of the region, from Albury-Wodonga's more developed nature to the events-focused bent of Deniliquin, to the historic ports of Echuca-Moama, through to the likes of Mildura, Swan Hill and beyond.
Which town appeals most to you is a matter of taste and exploration - which makes the act of discovering your favourite slice of the Murray all the more enticing.
