It is a good place to travel
Molly Morris 3 months ago

It is a good place to travel. A bit fewer animals than Melbourne Zoo. But the big place for the animals, and a huge open range area. Can't tell which zoo is better. But I can tell both zoos are worth to visit. If you don't like buying expensive food there, I recommend that you can picnic or BBQ at the rose garden.

It was so easy to purchase the tickets before you go

It was so easy to purchase the tickets before you go. There was no line, we walked straight up to pre-paid tickets and walked right in. A great family day out. With no hassles at all. Beautiful weather makes it all a nicer, family day out. Everyone should use the pre-paid ticket.

We enjoyed our time at the Werribee Open Range Zoo

We enjoyed our time at the Werribee Open Range Zoo, it is a huge, well-decorated zoo. The safari bus is a must to take as it will bring you to the open range field, and look at animals at their natural habitat within close proximity. The zoo is also well decorated with facilities to engaged children with. Highly recommended!

We visited the Werribee Open Range Zoo. Everything was perfect from the time I made the booking through Experience Oz. The zoo is worth a visit for its natural beauty & range of animals. The safari tour is icing on the cake. Best for kids. Must visit when in Melbourne!

Kids loved this zoo

Kids loved this zoo. Best one I've been to. Everyone loved the safari bus tour and seeing the animals up close. Lots of variety. Kids loved the sand pit where we stopped to have lunch and a play. Will most definetly be returning.

The Werribee Zoo visit went very well

The Werribee Zoo visit went very well. It was a fun family day out for my 6year old daughter. The open range safari ride into the savannah was brilliant and the so well organised it was a great experience. Try and do the zoo keeper talks, very informative and it's lovely to see them interacting with the animals.

We had a great day at the Werribee open range zoo with our 10 year old daughter

We had a great day at the Werribee open range zoo with our 10 year old daughter. She especially enjoyed the four newborn lion cubs that were on show that day. We were lucky to be early before the queue got so busy at lunchtime. We particularly loved the bus tour on the open range which was the closest we ever got to the wild animals. My daughter took notes of the the guide's very informative comments. The girraffes got so close that we got to see their blue toungues. We absolutely recommend this experience. Cheers.

We started off with the safari bus tour which was great
Paul Yeo 2 years ago

We started off with the safari bus tour which was great. Our host was full of information and pointed out the various animals by name, their habits and what they like/dislike. We then did the trails and the footpaths were shady and easy to follow. The animals in the enclosures were however hard to spot at times. We enjoyed the lion talk and feeding time. Food was great at the Meerkat Cafe. The activities at the Ranger Kids were a hit with our four year old.

We all had a fun experience at the zoo especially the safari ride
Clarisse Ahmed 2 years ago

We all had a fun experience at the zoo especially the safari ride. It was a perfect day to have the closest encounter with the giraffes. My kids was so hapoy and so as my family who came over from overseas. Will definitely come back because we wasn't able to see all the animals, but I can't blame them because summer is just too hot for everyone including animals. Thanks again for this good deal Experience Oz.

If you’re looking for an epic animal encounter without the hefty price tag, a trip to the Victorian countryside will soon put you in the right place. Located just a short trip from the Melbourne CBD sits Werribee Open Range Zoo, with a range of animal experiences unlike any other available in Australia.

So lace up your shoes, put on your hat and make sure your camera is fully charged as you get ready for a day exploring the ‘African Savannah’.

That's exactly what I did on my most recent visit and boy was I impressed.

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

How to get there

By car: Werribee Open Range Zoo is located around 38 minutes southwest of the CBD and features a large, free car park.

By public transport: If travelling from the city you can catch the Werribee Train Line out to Werribee Station and then a bus from the station to the front entrance of the zoo.

By shuttle: You can book onto the zoo shuttle that departs the CBD every morning.

Highlights

  • Explore the large zoo
  • Wide range of animals
  • Informative animal presentations
  • Scenic journey through the savannah
  • See lions, hippos, giraffes and zebras
  • Great for all ages

What you'll do

Travel out of the city

The thought of travelling out to the suburb of Werribee is more daunting than the actual experience. If you don’t have access to a car or don’t want to spend the additional $35 per person for a shuttle out to the park, the realisation that you’ll have to navigate public transport sets in.

Departing from our hotel on Flinders Street (conveniently located opposite the train station) we briefed our concierge to double check our travel instructions and set out on our adventure.

The first surprise came at the Flinders Street Station train ticket booth when the attendant proclaimed a total of $12 for a return trip for two adults. That meant we were already on the right track for saving money – or putting it away for more expenses later in the day.

Catching the Werribee line to Werribee Station (the last stop on the line) took around 45-minutes. Looking out the window we knew we weren’t in the city anymore, as the setting was more appropriate to that of Africa rather than the capital of Victoria.

Upon arriving at the station, we hurried along to catch one of the buses that were to drop us right at the door. As promised, we arrived within 10 minutes to a short queue, thanks to our early start on the day.

After receiving our passes we were ready to explore the park and snap some great photos of the cute, scary and large animals that call the Werribee Open Range Zoo home. Before we could embark on what was to be the highlight of the day (the Off-Road Safari), we had a few hours to wander around the rest of the park.

Follow the Australian Journey Trail

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

We began our expedition on the Australian Journey Trail. Due to our early arrival Bandicoot Hideout was closed, however, we could still see some of the other animals strolling around and waking up to the new day. Led by an interesting tour guide, we said “good morning” to some lounging kangaroos, strolling emus and hungry koalas.

The large grounds gave the animals a lot of space to roam, so they were all spread out (or hiding) from the snap-happy tourists entering their personal space.

The next point on the agenda was the Pula Reserve Trail – the main trail in the park.

Walk along the Pula Reserve Trail

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

Following the path clockwise, we saw our first gorilla grabbing some shade under a cubby house. The distance of the gorilla from the lookout platform was quite far, so our views of this big beast weren’t the best, but there was still more to come.

As we continued following the track we came across the African Village, a collection of huts spread around a luscious grassy knoll with picnic tables perfect for morning or afternoon tea throughout the day. With plenty of shade from overhanging trees, this looked like the perfect place to relax and let the kids run around, as some people had already figured out.

Continuing onwards, we saw some playful Vervet Monkeys, curious Meerkats, sleepy African Wild Dogs and, of course, the kings of the jungle themselves – the Lions.

Admire the lions

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

Despite their sleepy demeanour, the set up of the lion enclosure was fascinating and provided great views of their home. With a deconstructed car facing the glass, the young ones were in their element as they steered and revved their engines on the lookout for the big cats.

We didn’t have to look too long before spotting these incredible creatures. The “daddy” lion was strolling around looking at the animals that were crowded behind the glass (us), “Mumma” lion was rolling around and stretching on the grass while her three not-so-little cubs were lounging around the corner with the two elders of the pack.

It was incredible seeing these creatures so relaxed and comfortable, but we were quite relieved to have that thick glass between us no matter how much they resembled our pet cats back home.

Next up was a visit to the zoo’s silent-but-deadly residents, the hippos. Greeted by a terrifying signpost, we were on alert as we neared the giant hippopotamus.

Say hi to the rest of the animals

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

With not one care in the world directed towards the gawking tourists, the hippos continued to sun themselves, not moving from the position I imagine they plonked themselves in hours ago.

This turned out to be THE place to be for the young ones with the Hippo Play Trail providing some intense fun with its giant sand pit and water pumping play area. The Hippo Beach Water Play has a good amount of seats for mum and dad to catch their breath while the young ones run around to their heart’s content.

There is also a small coffee shop located here selling a small selection of food and drink. But be warned: you might not be the only caffeine-craving parents at the zoo.

Moving forward we pressed our faces up to the glass to get a glimpse of the speedy cheetah, however from what we saw this cheetah prefers to lie down than run around in the morning. After seeing the length of a cheetah’s stride from the interactive display, we were eager to see this beast in action.

After a longer-than-expected search to see the cheetah (they’re quite good at camouflaging), all it did was pop its head up to say “hello” from a great distance away. After pointing out the distant feline to fellow zoo-goers, we moved on to observe our primal cousins, the gorillas.

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

This is one of the largest gorilla exhibits in the world, and large it is! Spreading over 6,000 square metres, these intelligent animals have ample amount of room to sit, climb, run and most importantly, sit down. Motaba and his two sons, Yakini and Ganyeka, call Werribee Zoo home and love the large digs they have scored – a heavy investment near one of the country’s most populous cities.

There are multiple viewing platforms to see the Silverbacks, but the view all depends on where they’ve chosen to plant themselves. There are a number of climbing poles, cubby houses and hammocks spread around the grounds as well as a replica playground for the kids to enjoy on the outside. It seems as though these gorillas have themselves a pretty impressive bachelor pad!

Attend the Serval Presentation

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

Before we knew it, it was 10:50 and the Serval Presentation was starting shortly, so we rushed over and grabbed a seat amongst the crowded audience. Going into this presentation not knowing anything about the animal except for its appearance, this was an incredibly informative, entertaining and nerve-wracking presentation.

With no glass or cage between this intelligent cat and ourselves, we watched as the handler led one of the girls out and introduced her to us.

Bigger, quicker and hungrier than your average house cat, the servals at Werribee Zoo are all sisters and know what they want – food. Showing off for the observing audience, the cats follow their food around the enclosure jumping great distances, climbing, crawling and running around; showing off a handful of their great talents.

This is one presentation you won’t want to miss. Doors to the presentation area open 10 minutes prior to the presentation and are shut promptly at 11 am. The doors are then locked for the security of the servals, so, unfortunately, latecomers won’t be allowed in.

Tour the Savannah

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

As part of admission, you can jump on board the shuttle that travels through the open-savannah style enclosure. Though the lines grow quickly, the wait is well worth it once you come face-to-face with some of the animals living in these large areas.

Climbing into the carriage - grab a window seat if possible - you'll then begin the journey around the grounds. We saw the likes of camels, Przewalski's Horses, antelopes and bison and moving forward we were treated to another view of the hippo's swimming hole.

As we drove around the plain the views were incredible, large open fields dotted with animals of all kinds created some incredible photo opportunities and was a hit with both the adults and the kids.

Werribee Open Range Zoo Review

However, the best was yet to come and as we drove around the corner just moments after lunch had been served, we were treated to an incredible spectacle. Rhinos, zebras and giraffes had all gathered together for their yummy lunch, which made an incredible sight to be seen.

The shuttle had pulled up and waited a little for the food to slowly deminish so the animals would wander closer, and like on queue, the giraffes made their way over to our carriage. Close enough that we felt as though you could almost reach out and touch them, this was an incredible experience that you would think to be reserved for African safaris.

Before long, it was time to move on and we made out way back to the Safari Station to continue exploring the rest of the park on foot.

My Recommendations

If you’re planning a trip to Melbourne and aren’t sure how to spend your time, I would highly recommend a trip out to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. Perfect for families, couples and solo travellers, the zoo’s open atmosphere makes it a truly happy and exciting place to be.

Great for the whole family with kids of all ages as well as solo and couple travellers, Werribee Open Range Zoo provides some great quality, affordable and enjoyable fun for everyone.
