View the story of the history of aerial combat at the excellent Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim - one of Marlborough's most unique attractions. This comprehensive display of lovingly-recreated World War 1 era planes - most owned by Sir Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame - highlights a significant chapter in New Zealand's history, and while here you'll see many great exhibits that show exactly how the aircraft were utilised. Featuring a number of world-class simulated sets that aim for ultra-realism, many of the dioramas are akin to the set of a movie and capture the drama of the period perfectly.

This well-curated museum features planes from a range of countries from Germany to Britain including the final landing of the "Red Baron" Manfred von Richtofen as well as a number of moving stories about the trials and tribulations of pilots from both the Allied and Central Powers sides of WWI.

The latest addition to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is the Dangerous Skies expedition. The dark and interesting addition unveils stories of World War 2 from the British Isles and German forests, to Russia and the jungles of South East Asia. The main feature on display includes the world's only flyable Mk1 Avro Anson and a Griffon powered Mk.XIVe Spitfire. Both men and women flew these vessels, but women were in fact more prominent and the expedition pays respect to women in combat through the life-like mannequin of Lydia Litvyak (Russia's 'White Lily of Stalingrad' and the top scoring female ace).

Guests can also learn a little bit about the New Zealand RAF pilot, James Hayter, who was shot down in England (only to parachute into the middle of a garden party). There are also immersive experiences and memorabilia drawn from the Battle of Stalingrad in Southern Russia.

Combined with an overwhelming amount of interesting information, this is an attraction that all ages will be able to appreciate, so book your tickets to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre online today.

Highlights

  • Knights of the Sky: Features Sir Peter Jackson’s own collection of WW1 aircraft and artifacts. This story of aviation in the Great War is brought to life in sensational sets created by the internationally acclaimed talent of WingNut Films and Weta Workshop. The theatrical treatment is both innovative and visually stunning. Captivating scenes depict the aircraft in context, sometimes recreating an incident that actually happened in the war. Rare memorabilia is on display, worthy of any national collection and ranges from beautifully crafted ‘trench art’ through to personal items belonging to the famous Red Baron himself
  • Dangerous Skies: Featuring stories from World War II, these are tales of daring, valour and tragedy stretching from the British Isles to the forests of Germany, an embattled but courageous Russia and the steaming hot jungles of South East Asia. Undoubtedly two of the star attractions of the new exhibition are a twin engine bomber, the world’s only flyable Mk1 Avro Anson and a Griffon powered Mk.XIVe Spitfire. Let us not forget the men that flew these magnificent machines and this time, women also feature more prominently. Russia’s Lydia Litvyak or the “White Lily of Stalingrad” as she was known in Soviet press releases, was the top scoring female ace and has been brought to life with a hauntingly life-like mannequin fashioned by the cinematic geniuses at Weta Workshop
  • Dangerous Skies may be a darker exhibition than Knights of the Sky but amongst the darkness is also moments of light. Such as the tale of New Zealander James Hayter, a pilot in the RAF who was shot down over England only to parachute into the middle of a garden party. In direct contrast, Southern Russia was the stage for the Battle of Stalingrad, a military engagement that saw terrible losses for both Russia and Germany. This section of the exhibition is comprised of memorabilia and an immersive experience that is both entertaining and chillingly thought provoking

Michelle 3 years ago To be honest, I thought I was going to walk in to a normal museum but my gosh, was I surprised. This is not a museum in my eyes but an amazing exhibition and display of World War 1. It had so much memorabilia that Peter Jackson has collected over the years and it was really fascinating. The displays of all the aircrafts and all the models of the war veterans were incredible. Luckily we had a guide to tell us all the stories and explain things to us whilst we explored the museum. I would definitely recommend this if you can. Loved it!
