Many of the Hunter Valley's attractions are its historic wineries, and several open their museums, homesteads and barrels to visitors as part of a tasting. Audrey Wilkinson in Pokolbin has an onsite museum, and two of its experiences take you inside. The Picnic Among the Vines includes entry to the museum, a wine masterclass and a hamper to eat in the vineyard, while the fortified wine and cheese tasting is seated inside the heritage-listed museum itself.
Tyrrell's Wines was established in 1858, and its tastings draw on more than 160 years of family winemaking. The VIP Premium Tasting covers current vintages and aged releases, and the Sacred Sites experience is a private three-hour tour with barrel tasting and exclusive use of the Dan Room in the historic homestead.
Tulloch Wines is a family-friendly stop, with a winery that has been going for more than a century. Its Hunter Heroes Tasting and Grazing Board pairs an adult tasting with a charcuterie board, and kids can add a Junior Tasting while teenagers can add a Kombucha Tasting. Both are booked alongside an adult wine tasting.
Away from the cellar door, Hunter Valley Horses runs a 45-minute horse-drawn carriage ride along local backroads and through vineyards and farmland. Children ride with a parent or guardian.
