The Springbrook National Park

Providing a cool, verdantly green alternative to the typical blue and gold glitz typically associated with the Gold Coast, Springbrook National Park is a criminally underrated day trip destination full of both pleasant scenery and a large number of things to do. One of the best overall natural free things to do in the region, Springbrook is a World Heritage listed concentration of tumbling waterfalls intermingled with pristine creeks that run amongst ancient trees - many of which can only be found here. The national park was formed 23 million years ago from the eruption of a volcano and is a true hub of natural diversity, with hundreds of species of trees and animals including koalas, parrots, lizards and more all viewable while exploring the park. Natural highlights abound at Springbrook, with a number of walking tracks available for visitors to showcase them to the fullest, including the Twin Falls Circuit and - perhaps most famous of all - the journey to Natural Bridge. One of the key highlights of the national park, Natural Bridge can be accessed via a relatively easy walking trail that takes around 30 to 40 minutes to complete, and results in an outlook of its iconic "cave waterfall" that is a mainstay of promotional photos highlighting Springbrook. It's a beautiful spot that's also home to millions of glow worms that make for a magical sight when viewed of an evening. Other highlights include the spectacular Purling Brook Falls - easily accessible by a walk from its nearby carpark, it's viewable via a purpose-built boardwalk that grants a great outlook. Perhaps the ultimate vantage point to take in the panorama surrounding Springbrook National Park is the Best Of All Lookout that lives up to its name, offering an outstanding view out to Murwillumbah and Mount Warning in the distance. Throw in a range of options for dining that come with some great outstanding environments and outlooks while serving quality cafe-style food, and you've got an excellent hub for adventure only a 40 minute drive from the Gold Coast's main accommodation hubs. While there is no public transport that travels to Springbrook, options for day tours that include transfers to and from the national park and provide a guided look at its highlights are available.
