Gold Coast, Queensland

When the topic of holiday destinations in Australia comes up, Queensland’s Gold Coast is nearly always one of the first to spring to mind. With a cavalcade of beautiful beaches, a famous nightlife, numerous theme parks and other attractions, winding waterways, and some great greenery all wrapped up in a package that includes famously good weather, it’s not hard to see why the city ranks highly on most people’s Aussie travel lists.

More on the Gold Coast below...

Why the Gold Coast?

State: Queensland

Why it's special: Home to some of Australia's best beaches and waterways; huge variety in tourist attractions aimed at families; theme parks are a major drawcard; greenery of the hinterland a wonderful alternative a short journey inland; famous nightlife; burgeoning cafe and restaurant scene

Best time to go: Autumn (April - May)

Considering it’s not a capital city – in truth, it’s more of a “strip” that features various suburbs spread out alongside roughly 70km of pristine beaches – it can be quite surprising to first-timers that the Gold Coast boasts one of the widest ranges of things to do of any region in Australia for visitors both local and international. With a reputation for adventure and nightlife, the Gold Coast is also one of the country’s most family-oriented destinations, offering a bevy of attractions suitable for kids as well.

While the first images often conjured up when one pictures the Gold Coast might be the glitz and glamour of the beach strip at Surfers Paradise, there’s far more to the region than that; head inland, for example, and you’ll come across one of the most impressive stretches of Hinterland all within a relatively short drive of one of the most glamorous cities in Australia. This greater Tamborine Mountain area offers boutique wineries, cascading waterfalls even a glow worm cave filled with thousands of these enchanting little creatures.

Back in the main “tourist area” and the activities available broaden even more – shopping centres abound for a dose of retail therapy, while restaurants, bars and pubs are numerous for indulging the tastebuds and the eyes. The Gold Coast is famed for all-things-aquatic as well – making such pastimes as surfing, scenic cruises, jet boating and much more all local fixtures both in the ocean and on one of the world’s longest canal systems.

The region's been undergoing a continual recent facelift to coincide with its ever-increasing popularity as a travel destination both domestic and international, too; its public transport is gradually improving, its flagship shopping centres duel amongst one another for title of top retail dog, and its foreshore areas both north and south continue to see much love that makes hanging out both on and adjacent to the sand a simple, pure joy.

Featuring an idyllic balance of weather and climate, things to do for young and old, and nature versus man-made offerings, and you’ve got one of the best all-round travel destinations in Australia that’s all capped off by some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Whether you're visiting to party, entertain the family, or simply unwind, there are few Aussie destinations that check as many boxes quite as well as the Gold Coast does.
