Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia

One of the greater Adelaide region's most popular day trips, the scenic Fleurieu Peninsula and blends together the best of food, wildlife, wine and weather together to make for a delightful locale just 45 minutes away from South Australia's capital. This is a part of the state of SA that's draped in greenery and filled with animal life while also providing coastal and river experiences for an idyllic balance of scenery.

More on the Fleurieu Peninsula below...

Why the Fleurieu Peninsula?

State: South Australia

Why it's special: Beautiful coastal region with diverse experiences ranging from wine, to island and marine life visits, vintage train rides and more

Best time to go: Spring

Boasting a balanced and enjoyable climate that brings along with it the fresh cleanliness of ocean air, the Fleurieu Peninsula has long been a treasure of South Australia for a variety of reasons. Both surrounded and dissected by water yet featuring verdant and rolling terrain, natural offerings play a key role in making the peninsula so appealing – a trip here is extremely flexible and allows for customising your visit however you see fit.

Looking for beachfront relaxation in the sunshine? Check. Wanting to indulge on any number of world-class wines? Feel free. After a slice of European-influenced history and charm? The Fleurieu delivers.

The region's offerings are immediately hinted at by passing through the wine-rich gateway of McLaren Vale – one of Australia's hotspots for Shiraz and several other wine varieties – with its lush landscape serving as a picturesque backdrop from which to consume a drop of the good stuff. It's also home to three other wine regions, each with their own individual charm including Currency Creek, the South Fleurieu area and the up-and-coming Langhorne Creek, which lies less than an hour's drive away from Adelaide and is thus closer than even the Barossa Valley to the SA capital.

There's an impressive number of wineries both large and small in the Vale numbering roughly 100 in total, and its strong history of production covers all bases when it comes to the bounty of the vineyard. Beer also plays a prominent role, as several boutique brewers that run the gamut of beer types from pale ale to pilsner can be found here.

Of course, being a peninsula it's only natural that coastal-focused offerings come into play, and the Fleurieu likewise delivers here as well – sweeping sections of beaches that are both swimmable and drivable abound, and plenty of charming seaside settlements offer enough to be destinations in and unto themselves. The Alexandrina district in particular is a hub of many standout townships, including the gorgeous beachfront of Goolwa, the charming and historic Strathalbyn, and the wonderfully balanced Port Elliot - to name just a few.

For an added touch of natural beauty, head to the Southern Fleurieu (Yankalilla region) and enjoy the scenery of Deep Creek Conservation Park. Laze on the pristine white sand of Normanville beach, picnic at Ingalalla waterfall, camp among kangaroos at spectacular Deep Creek Conservation Park or hike part of the 1200 kilometre Heysen Trail (which is one of the premier walking trails in the world).

Mix in a dash of both European and indigenous Australian history to the Fleurieu Peninsula's inherently gorgeous natural coastal offerings, and you've got a travel hotspot with something for everyone. Much of the experiences available on the Fleurieu Peninsula are oriented around enjoying the clean air and fresh atmosphere, whether it's on the coastal portions such as the charming Victor Harbor, or slightly further inland to sample the many delightful wineries of McLaren Vale.

The diversity here is key to making it such an appealing destination; try delicious cheeses, explore one of Australia's best coastal national parks by both land and water, ride a vintage train ride alongside a wonderful coastline, and much more. Add in a number of picturesque little hub towns throughout including the likes of Goolwa, Port Elliot and Willunga that each offer their own quirks and wonderful stretches of beachfront to enjoy, and the Fleurieu has plenty to offer travellers of multiple dispositions.
