This duo of towns on the banks of the Murray River owe much of their extensive and interesting history to their raw physical location on Australia's longest waterway, having been initially established in the mid-1800's to take advantage of the Murray's mighty waters. Paddlesteamer vessels that plied their trade from each town became symbolic of the region, and to this day it remains home to the world's largest fleet of these boats - several of which still continue to operate.
Why it's special: Located on the banks of the mighty Murray River and an easy two and a half hours drive from Melbourne, the twin towns of Echuca Moama provide a picturesque piece of history, with the historic port of Echuca recognised as one of Australia's finest heritage icons.
Best time to go: Autumn and Spring
Rich in history to this day, numerous historic buildings and businesses appeared as the towns of Echuca-Moama developed, and in the present era they serve as a wonderfully-preserved snapshot that is widely recognised as one of the country's finest heritage icons.
Visitors to the towns who are looking to step back in time can take part in a variety of activities that hark back to simpler days, witnessing blacksmiths perform their craft, taking a guided tour of museums and old-time pubs, visiting historic wineries, hiking bushwalking trails and, of course, taking a ride on a paddle steamer themselves. Add this to the exceptionally welcoming attitudes of the locals, and it's an excellent location for a laid-back, multi-day adventure just 2.5 hours from Melbourne.
Much of the charm of this region comes from simply strolling around and encountering each of its stores, restaurants, cafes and even accommodation options, as Echuca Moama emanates a relaxed, escapist feel even from its relatively mundane buildings. There are also several museums here that go into greater depth on the history of both the twin towns themselves, with focuses on both the general past as well as its Murray River-influenced aquatic involvement.
Of course, this seems hardly necessary when the town's port is a veritable living museum in and of itself; its Discovery Centre, in particular, serves as a great overall snapshot of the region right next to the water, and interested parties who want to go one step further can be lead by a guide clad in era-appropriate fashion to help bring the past to life.
Add in a number of other highlights such as a military museum, horse-drawn carriage rides, and a handful of yearly festivals that take place throughout, and there's never a better time to visit Echuca-Moama and step back into the past than the present
