What you can expect

Since the early 1950s, a remarkable and natural wonder has unfolded during high tide in the serene tropical waters of Darwin’s Doctors Gully. This enchanting phenomenon continues to delight visitors of all ages.

In 1981, Aquascene was established to share this magical experience with families from around the world. Today, it welcomes more than 70,000 visitors each year, earning praise and attention from media outlets across Australia and beyond. It’s a destination where curiosity and joy unite, making it a must-see for families seeking unforgettable adventures.

Doctors Gully also holds a fascinating piece of history. During World War II, the area was seconded by the Royal Australian Air Force as a critical northern base for Australia’s largest flying boat squadrons, the Catalinas. In 1943, two oil tanks and a pump house were installed at the back of the gully to support Darwin’s naval oil reserves and the operations of the Catalina Flying Boat Base and RAAF Marine Section. These legendary planes played a vital role in the war effort, laying mines in enemy ports while flying daringly low—often just 10 meters above the water—to avoid radar detection.

At Aquascene, families can immerse themselves in the vibrant marine life and the captivating stories of Doctors Gully, a place where nature and history blend seamlessly into an unforgettable experience.
