Crocosaurus Cove Review

Libby Larsen

Darwin Experience Expert

Darwin folk are croc obsessed! To get your croc fix head to Crocosaurus Cove where opportunities abound a wide range of croc experiences - from cuddling a baby croc, feeding a horde of feisty young crocs, to plunging into an aquarium with a monster croc in the Cage of Death!

Understandably, the crocs are the main draw card – but there are a whole range of reptiles to see from deadly snakes, huge pythons, and lizards to cute little turtles.

Being a Darwin local with 2 boys aged 4 and 6, Crocosaurus Cove is one of our favourite regular haunts.

It opens at 9am and closes at 6pm. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here, or longer!

Crocosaurus Cove Darwin Libby Larsen Experience Oz Review

How to get there

It’s located on Mitchell Street which is the main street in the city - so you can’t get any more convenient than that. You can easily walk there if you are staying in the city, or if you are out on town chances are you’ll have a car. There are pay and display carparks on Mitchell Street. It’s about 10 mins walk from the main bus terminal is the city – all super easy!

Highlights

  • Getting up close to huge crocs
  • Hands on encounters with snakes and lizards
  • Croc feeding
  • Holding a baby croc and getting a photo
  • The Cage of Death – Australia’s only crocodile dive

What you’ll do

Make sure you check the show times before you head in so you can plan your visit.

Heading Inside

The fun begins from the moment you walk through the entrance which is a dark cave with images of moving crocs on the floor. You come out the other side to see some seriously massive crocs in huge two story aquariums.

Head upstairs through the Fresh Water Aquarium which is filled with Top End marine life. (They do shows there at 11am and 3.30pm).

Once upstairs, here are the main options.

The Cage of Death

Crocosaurus Cove Darwin Libby Larsen Experience Oz Review

The famous Cage of Death Experience is where up to 2 people are suspended in a cage from a monorail which is lowered into one of the aquariums with a big croc. Don’t worry! You are in fact totally separate from the croc. To make it more exciting the zoo keepers dangle tasty morsels from a huge rod up close to the cage so you and the croc can get familiar!

You need to be 15 and over (with parent’s consent if you are under 18) and do a safety briefing beforehand. They run 11 sessions each day from 9.30am to 5pm. It’s an additional cost for this experience so make sure you book in advance with Experience Oz.

I admit I haven’t done this yet, but as the NT Experience Expert – I might have to take the plunge, literally!

Take in the big croc feeding show

I’d highly recommend the Big Croc Feeding Show where you get to see the zoo keepers feed the huge crocs. There are 2 shows each day. After the Big Croc show head on up to the fishing platform grab a rod and feed the hungry little juvenile crocs. It’s fun!

Cuddle Fluffy and have your photo taken

Fluffy is a cute baby salt water croc that you can snuggle. There’s also the option to have a professional photo with Fluffy between 9.30am and 5.30pm.

Swim with little crocs

This is one of my favourite things at Crocosaurus Cove, and something that lots of locals don’t seem to know about. It’s a surreal experience where you can swim in the plunge pool that has large underwater viewing window that’s adjacent to an aquarium packed with juvenile crocs.

Wander through the reptile house

Not only does the Reptile House have an awesome collection of deadly snakes, lizards, turtles, pythons, frogs and more – it’s fully air-conditioned which is perfect when it gets hot. The zoo keepers run two shows - Meet the Reptile and the Reptile Feeding show where you get the chance to handle reptiles which is an awesome opportunity to take a photo.

VIP Tour

In you want VIP treatment take the 1.5 hour and get behind the scenes and have your own turn of feeding one of the big crocs.

You leave through a souvenir shop which has the most mind boggling array of crocodile merchandise.
