Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Far more than just a city of politicians, Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory is the central hub of the nation. It’s a modern city that is proud of its rich cultural heritage with an emphasis on experiences that are both historical and educational, coupled with some great surrounding nature. With museums, art galleries and impressive architecture this is a great destination for cultural enthusiasts as few destinations in the country can match.

More on Canberra below...

Why Canberra?

State: Australian Capital Territory

Why it's special: Pre-eminent Australian destination for historical and cultural attractions; lovely, well-laid out city with plenty of greenery; a number of family-friendly "edutainment" style attractions for kids; excellent and ever-evolving food, wine, coffee and craft beer scene

Best time to go: Spring (September - November)

Canberra is renowned for being one of Australia's smartest cities, and it isn't hard to see why. It's a hub of civilisation which is filled to the brim with natural and scientific museums, art galleries and impressive architecture, each with unique aspects combining to give the city its relatively distinguished flavour. As a result of its original design during the historic 'green city movement' back in the early 1900s, Canberra is both well planned and abundant with nature with a whopping 53% of the total area being preserved as parks and reserves.

Canberra’s inland location acts as a central to hub to surrounding surf, ski and bush land. The centrepiece of this beautiful destination is Lake Burley Griffin, bordered by Mount Ainslie to the east and Black Mountain to the west, where locals enjoy walking, riding, jogging, sailing - even segwaying – their way around and on. This is a city that boasts a calm, country-esque feeling, but where unexpected surprises await around every corner.

Canberra is a haven for all things cultural. The city is home to some of the most comprehensive and unique examples of artwork in Australia, with the likes of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Australia serving as vast and extensive attractions covering art from multiple regions and time periods. In addition, the Australian War Memorial is both an impressive piece of architecture in its own right as well as an in-depth documentation of our country's wartime history and an appropriate tribute to our fallen heroes.

Perhaps Australia’s most up-and-coming city, Canberra has seen continued fast growth over recent years yet it provides one of the best balances of urbanisation versus nature of any Aussie capital. Visitors can go from sipping a coffee made by Australia’s best barista from Ona Coffee, to hiking at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and finish of the day with a glass of wine from Australia’s Best Bar, Bar Rochford.

As well as these more typically traditional attractions, the Canberra region is home to a number of more unique offerings that will interest different age groups as well - Questacon is an attraction that manages to "make learning fun" by showcasing scientific principles and experiments in a highly interactive manner; Cockington Green Gardens is a charming miniature recreation of the world’s buildings and various other scenes; the National Zoo & Aquarium is a comprehensive collection of animals and houses the popular Jamala Wildlife Lodge; and the Australian Institute of Sport is the country’s hub for the training of our Olympic and other athletes.

Couple these attractions with Canberra’s solid blend of fine dining and shopping and the potential to take part in day trips to various verdant surrounding areas - as well as its proximity to both Sydney and Melbourne - and you’ve got a destination that’s both underrated for a getaway and has much to offer for the more refined traveller.
