Brisbane, Queensland
Perhaps Australia’s most up-and-coming city, Brisbane has seen continued fast growth over recent years yet still manages to provide one of the best balances of urbanisation versus nature of any Aussie capital. The Queensland capital city has become a haven for those seeking outdoor adventures, big-ticket cultural events, a culinary jaunt - or all three. Brisbane is transforming with new developments ready to welcome new visitors.
More on Brisbane below...
Why Brisbane?
State: Queensland
Why it's special: Perhaps the best weather of any Australian capital; nice balance between urban development and nature; South Bank a standout social spot; great cultural attractions; excellent bike and CityCat systems for transport
Best time to go: Autumn / Spring
Brisbane‘s South Bank precinct, in particular, is a beacon of all-things-right with city development, featuring spacious grassed areas intermingled with chic art galleries and a variety of museums that make getting a dose of culture a pleasant undertaking. Located alongside the Brisbane River, the area is host to not only an enjoyable waterfront aspect, but an easy walk away from the restaurant and dining hubs of Brisbane proper.
One of the core reasons Brisbane is such an enjoyable city to spend time in is that it lacks a lot of the “hemmed-in” feeling many other capitals around the world tend to have. Great lengths have been taken to provide alternative methods of public transport to help alleviate traffic congestion, with its excellent CityCat water taxi system being one example, and its expansive amount of bike ways and paths being another.
Ideal for getting around the city regardless of if you’re a local making the daily commute to work or a visitor looking to explore some of the city’s most scenic spots, cycling offers a relaxed, family-friendly and healthy way to take in Queensland’s capital. This is augmented by the city’s comprehensive CityCycle system that allows for the public rental of bikes from a number of terminals dotted around the city, meaning that you’ll seldom be in a spot where a bike is not available nearby.
Perhaps Australia’s most up-and-coming city, Brisbane has seen continued fast growth over recent years yet still manages to provide one of the best balances of urbanisation versus nature of any Aussie capital.
In addition, the city is very lively and offers a range of activities for those who prefer to get more physically involved; its bridge climb offers an adventure with great views of the city, and its proximity to nearby Moreton Island and its Tangalooma Resort means there are numerous cruises and island adventures available where you can do everything from going whale watching to feeding dolphins, all within an extremely convenient ride from the city.
Combined with some great family attractions highlighted by Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, its wonderful Cultural Centre, and plenty of spots to grab a quality bite to eat or view some live entertainment – as well as a great nightlife scene – Brisbane offers everything you could want from a larger city without most of the excessive crowds you can sometimes encounter in other Aussie metropolises.
