The Cataract Gorge

Located just a short 15-minute stroll from the city centre, Launceston’s little piece of wilderness is perfect for nature lovers. With a range of things to visitors to see and do, the Cataract Gorge and First Basin is a must-see for visitors to the Launceston region. Follow one of the various walking and hiking trails through the scenic wilderness and beautifully manicured gardens or take a break and have a snack at the cafe while you watch some of the peacocks show off their vibrant feathers. The grounds also house a large suspension bridge, swimming pool as well as panoramic views around the area. One of the main attractions is the chairlift, which is one of the world’s longest single span life open to the public to ride for a small fee. The chairlift was erected in 1972, spanning the length of the basin, covering around 450 metres distance. Running along a slow enough pace for guests to enjoy the beautiful scenes and snap some photos of the spectacular views.
