Botanical Gardens Geelong

A longtime fixture of the Geelong cityscape, the Geelong Botanic Gardens ranks as one of the oldest of its kind in all of Australia, with an origin dating back to the mid-1800's and carrying an aura of history about it as a result. There are a number of heritage trees and buildings contained within the park that go alongside with the more modern additions, with well-manicured lawns that are kept in tip-top condition. The gardens are situated in close proximity to the Geelong waterfront area of Eastern Beach, and as a result are easy to reach in a short walk from the main foreshore. Geelong's Botanic Gardens are not huge, but still feature a delightful mixture of gardens and greenhouses, as well as a hot house that contains various exotic plant species. Its rose garden is a particular highlight - especially in spring - with the various vibrantly coloured roses making for a great spectacle. The gardens also contain a number of water features and fountains that serve to break up the greenery, as well as the occasional sculpture that can be encountered throughout. It's a great, peaceful space overall despite its popularity, with plenty of room for the likes of barbecues and picnics, a handful of winding walking tracks, and several benches on which to relax in the shade. Lastly, the gardens are also home to an excellent little cafe called The Tea House that provides an enjoyable mix of sandwiches, salads, cakes and other light meals, while public BBQ's are available for those looking to self-cater instead.
