The Brisbane Powerhouse

What you can expect

An example of fantastic use of an old building given new life, the **Brisbane Powerhouse** - which derives its name from its status as a former power station - sits on the banks of the Brisbane River and has been transformed into a hub for creative outlet and performance. A venue that encapsulates the “edgy” arts scene of Brisbane in full, the Powerhouse plays host to over a thousand performances per year spanning genres such as comedy, dance, film, cabaret, acrobatics, theatre and more. The old building provides a lovely ambience, with its position on the waterfront allowing visitors to kick back, enjoy a drink and watch the city’s water traffic go by before heading inside to watch some of the excellent and diverse talent up close. Local performers as well as national and international acts intertwine here, while weekends the venue hosts free live music performances to soak in. The venue comprises of two main stages and three sub areas which are great in and of themselves, however it’s the architecture of the building itself that’s the star of the show. Its spaces, textures and overall “solid” feel is quite unique, and its variety of facilities makes for a great spot for a full evening combining a meal with a show - and one that comes without an exorbitant price tag to boot. Regardless of if you’re after a night worth of top-notch entertainment or simply a distinct and enjoyable venue to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat, the Powerhouse makes for one of Brisbane’s most memorable nights out. If you’re after a live event in Brisbane other than sport and which comes with a touch of enjoyable and eclectic grit, this is an essential on any travel itinerary or list of weekend plans for locals.
