What you can expect

History and retail therapy combine at the Adelaide Arcade, a historic shopping hub built in 1885 and home to over 100 boutique and specialty stores that incorporates materials such as cast iron, marble and glass to wonderful effect. Accessed right off the city's central shopping district at Rundle Mall, the 2-level split-story arcade is decked out with beautiful tiling that make strolling along its expanse a joy, and perusing its extensive range of elegant stores - not to mention a solid variety of food and coffee - an exercise in Victorian charm. The arcade is home to a number of long-running retail icons (including the must-visit Haigh's Chocolates) that range all the way from budget discount stores to exclusive niche items such as jewellery, hats, dolls and more. There's also a museum in the arcade that documents its extensive history by way of vintage newspaper articles, photographs and other miscellaneous artefacts that provide a more detailed look at the era of its construction. There are few such shopping districts in Australia to explore - and the arcade experience can be taken even further with a ghost tour as local legend says it's haunted!
