The Kimberley, Western Australia
Your #1 voted Top Destination to Experience for 2015, Broome and its surrounding Kimberley region encapsulate the words "Aussie getaway" in every sense of the term. Secluded, escapist and ruggedly beautiful, this is an off-the-beaten-track destination that features a blend of stunning sunsets, pristine beaches, fiery red earth and numerous incredible day trip destinations.
More on The Kimberley below...
Why The Kimberley?
State: Western Australia
Why it's special: landscape home to a huge collection of unique natural wonders; some of the country's most isolated and undervisited gems; everything on a massive scale, from lakes to waterfalls to towering rock formations
Best time to go: Shoulder seasons (Autumn / Spring)
2015's poll winner is one that captured the imaginations of those looking for a unique and adventurous travel getaway. Western Australia's Kimberley region is many things, but due to its relatively isolated nature it's largely the air of the exotic and uncharted it carries that strikes the greatest appeal.
That year’s number 1 ranking was far from a surprise however, as this wild and heart-achingly beautiful part of Australia blends together two of the core factors that typically fare strongly in these polls - stunning water and island environments, along with elements of the Outback – into a single, wondrous whole.
It's this tapestry of reds, blues, oranges and other hues that highlight the possible contrasts that the Australian landscape can provide, and the Kimberley region has numerous natural features that present them in different and often striking ways. From the incredible staircase-to-the-moon sunsets of Broome's Cable Beach to the incredible phenomena of the Horizontal Falls and the distinctive hive-like rock formations of the World Heritage-listed Bungle Bungles, the Kimberley takes sightseeing convention and flips it on its head.
In terms of regions within the vast expanse of Western Australia, few pack as many unique and impressive wonders into their available space than the Kimberley region. Home to a number of distinct natural and geographical highlights unlike anything else in Australia – or the world – including several of the country’s most outstanding national parks (Karijini and Purnululu), the north-western part of the state is teeming with exploration opportunities for those looking for adventures outside of civilisation.
Diversity here is key; from the distinct “beehives” of the Bungle Bungles or the terrain of Kununurra or the vivid blue waters of the Buccaneer Archipelago – to name just a few sites – no two views are quite the same. The Kimberley is also home to one of Australia’s most majestic natural highlights: Mitchell Falls, one of the country’s most-photographed highlights. Is it cheap to travel here? No. But with a “bucket list” item around every corner, there are certain things one simply can’t put a price on.
