Darwin, Northern Territory
If there’s any capital city that sums up the essence of what true Australia is all about in many people’s eyes, Darwin may just likely be it. The city and its surrounds is simultaneously a link to the past – full of culture and both indigenous and foreign history – while also being one of the most modernly-designed capitals in the country.
More on Darwin below...
Why Darwin?
State: Northern Territory
Why it's special: Great mixture of the historic and the modern; famously beautiful sunsets; ideal winter escape destination; beach markets a local staple; unique local attractions; springboard to a number of incredible day trip destinations
Best time to go: Winter (June - August)
If you’re looking for something other than the generic “resorts and beaches” island holiday, Darwin makes a great choice for a trip; it’s a city that’s culturally diverse, boasts a pleasant location along the waterfront, plays host to famously beautiful sunsets and serves as the ideal gateway to a huge range of adventure and exploration opportunities just beyond its borders. It’s said that life is slower in Darwin, and this is by no means a bad thing – the result is that you’ll be in an uncrowded destination where everything from adventure to fresh seafood to cultural highlights is all at your fingertips.
Unlike many other popular Aussie travel destinations, Darwin truly shines as a spot to visit during winter as its pleasantly warm weather is conducive to a host of outdoor activities in which to take part – its bustling beachfront markets at Mindil Beach being a prime example of this fact. Beachgoing in the city and its surrounds are also very viable during the winter in Darwin, with water temperatures comfortable enough to take a dip without requiring any protective clothing. While other destinations around the country will have you scrambling for your winter woollies, Darwin will see you donning a T-shirt and shorts and strolling along the beach.
The city’s location also provides some of the best fishing in the country, with every fisherman’s dream, the Barramundi, being abundant in the surrounding waters. If you’re looking for a dose of history or culture, its got entertainingly informative museums and attractions within easy travelling distance. Looking just outside the city meanwhile, Darwin offers visitors the chance to make a relatively short trip to the likes of natural wonders such as Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks.
In terms of things to do, Darwin delivers unique offerings both within and outside its borders. With legendary (and legendarily beautiful) thunderstorms, crocodile-inhabited waterways, World War 2 memorials and a modern CBD, Darwin is a city of juxtapositions – you can spend one day soaking up the immensely detailed war history at the likes of the Defence of Darwin Experience and the Darwin Aviation Heritage Centre, and the next find yourself relaxing in a comfortable chair and watching a film outdoors at the Deckchair Cinema. Come face to face with massive saltwater crocs at Crocosaurus Cove, then take in some Aboriginal culture at one of the many attractions or tours on offer in the region.
