From nature lovers to those just looking for great picture opportunities
Lauren Kuhn 2 years ago

From nature lovers to those just looking for great picture opportunities, this is the tour for you. The hikes aren't strenuous which makes the views even more spectacular than they already are. Anyone on this tour sees the highlights of the Gold Coast bush walks and receives historical information from the friendly tour guides that wouldn't be discovered if done independently. I definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to experience the nature of the GC. Cheers.

The tour leader was really nice and friendly
Victoria Cheow 3 years ago

The tour leader was really nice and friendly, but could speak a little slower as his slang is quite strong and difficult to comprehend his words occasionally. Improvements can be made if the tour provided complimentary water and probably include more exciting attractions like visiting farms with cows/camels etc. I really liked the fruit farm. The trip was overall pleasant and enjoyable. Good job!

This was a nice tour except it was a very big day
Brittney 3 years ago

This was a nice tour except it was a very big day. The walks through the National Park weren't too long which was good (wear comfy shoes) but the bus ride was crazy long! Try and bring a book, earphones or something to keep you occupied as it is quite a fair drive to and from. Our tour guide John was great! Very friendly and knew a lot about the area, he made it very enjoyable. Visiting the Bush Tucker barn was interesting however everyone was really tired by the time we got there so there wasn't much going on. Overall a good day, but like I said, very long and tiring.

The Hinterlands are absolutely beautiful
Ildi Budai 4 years ago

The Hinterlands are absolutely beautiful, and this tour took us to all the major areas, seeing five waterfalls including the incredible Natural Bridge. The tour guide was great too. He had a great sense of humour which added to the overall experience. I would recommend this tour highly.

It's not as exciting as one had imagined
Josephine Ong 4 years ago

It's not as exciting as one had imagined. A few waterfalls were viewed far away. The fruit tasting was good but could have been organized in a more exciting manner. The facial and other products on display on the table looked old and outdated. It's costly for a trip like this.

We really enjoyed our day with Gold Coast Hinterland tours
Mathew 5 years ago

We really enjoyed our day with Gold Coast Hinterland tours. The friendly and informative driver made the tour special and made sure we had enough time at each destination and kept an eye out for any wildlife to point out to us. We were lucky enough to spot a snake taking a nap in the tree tops.

Great day out and beautiful scenery
Maddie 6 years ago

Great day out and beautiful scenery. Our guide Keith was very entertaining, professional and knowledgable about the area.

The Gold Coast Hinterland may not ba as well-known as the region's theme parks and other attractions, but is a beautiful must-see location regardless. Stroll along the boutiques of Gallery Walk, immerse yourself in natural rainforests, and see a different side of the Gold Coast with a hinterland tour.

Springbrook & Tamborine Mountain Hinterland Day Tour Review

Brittney Deguara

Experience Oz Travel Writer

Imagine spending the day walking around luscious World Heritage-listed rainforest, listening to flowing waterfalls cascade down rocky cliff faces and trialling some of the unique fruits with a seasoned farmer.

This is how I spent my day aboard Scenic Hinterland’s Springbrook National Park and Tamborine Mountain Hinterland Day Tour from the heart of the Gold Coast.

How to get there

By car: The tour departs from Beach Road in Surfers Paradise, you can drive yourself and park in nearby parking lots to catch the bus.

By public transport: You can catch the tram or a bus into the heart of Surfers Paradise and then walk to beach road.

By transfer: The tour bus can pick up and drop off passengers from a number of nearby hotels.

Highlights

  • Scenic adventure
  • Experienced guide
  • Informative tour
  • Relaxing bus journey
  • Cascading waterfalls
  • Ample great photo opportunities

What you'll do

Depart Surfers Paradise

The day began with a ride aboard a 20-seater bus through the populated Gold Coast suburbs and up into the beautiful Springbrook National Park. After being collected from my accommodation – “my accommodation” being the Experience Oz Gold Coast office – we began our ascent up the mountain.

Under the hand of experienced tour guide, John Powell, we were shown various points of interest in the area including the popular Robina Shopping Centre and the Super Stadium. John is an expert in all-things-Gold Coast, having toured these parts for up to 10 years, so I knew we were in for a great, information-filled day.

“I love meeting people,” John proclaimed as he waited for the group to re-board the bus after a short pit stop, and judging by the happy faces on board, they all enjoyed meeting John.

Venturing up the mountain was the beginning of the beautiful scenic views to come. Surrounded by lush greenery, the 15 passengers – myself included – kept their eyes peeled for any sightings of native Australian wild life (no luck just yet). Once atop the mountain, our first stop was Purling Brook Falls.

Admire Purling Brook Falls

Scenic Hinterland Day Tour Gold Coast Review

With stunning views overlooking the vast green valley, Purling Brook Falls is the first of many scenic stops. Upon stepping out of the bus, the weather is a dramatic change to that of the sizzling Gold Coast heat. The cold falls down as the pace picks up on our walk to the falls lookout.

After a short stroll through the rainforest, where we encountered a plaque explaining common indigenous terms and meanings, we broke out onto the viewing platform. Looking to the right is the rushing falls that was showing off a constant flow of fresh water thanks to previous rainfall in the region. Our visit was one of the lucky ones as weather permitted us clear views of the surrounding regions.

Our proximity to the falls was then improved, with another short walk back to a fork in the road; we then followed the right leading trail, over a small bridge and onto the closest lookout. Close enough to smell the fresh water, our views were enhanced with the vibrant sounds and fragrances the falls produced.

Back to the bus for a short trip to our next stop the Best Of All Lookout.

Take in views from the Best of All Lookout

Before we reached our destination, John made an unscheduled stop to point out to the group some of the popular wildlife visitors to the area commonly see. A large mural painted on the Springbrook Community Hall in Centenary Park depicted some of the region’s most popular animals. Pointing out the large goannas, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, platypus, snakes and possums, we were even more determined to catch a glimpse of some of these creatures.

Moving forward, we made our way up into the clouds inching ever closer to the New South Wales border. After a short walk through the forest and stopping to admire an Antarctic beech tree, we made it to the large lookout. The weather wasn’t on our side as thick clouds produced a white wall, blocking any views of the area.

Seeing this often, John advised we stay a few minutes longer to see if the clouds would disperse. They shifted slightly allowing us a little visibility of the area, but they wouldn’t budge – back to the bus we went. On a clear day, the lookout spans across the horizon with views of Mount Warning.

On our arrival back to the bus, fellow tourists spotted a slithery friend – later identified as a carpet snake – sunning himself in the tree. Though non-venomous, these pythons are still capable of striking and biting prey – even humans, hence the reason we were told to steer clear.

Our next stop on the agenda was Goomoolahra Falls.

Venture to Goomoolahra Falls

Goomoolahra is the indigenous word for “big waterfall”, and this is definitely an accurate interpretation of the falls. Another short walk led to the platform, positioning us so close to the falls it felt as though you could reach out and touch them.

The scenes were stunning; sweeping views of the area were commentated on by John. Pointing out various points of interest. Looking west we could see the flat top of Tamborine Mountain and in the distance, to the east, we could see the rising skyline of Surfers Paradise.

It then dawned how far we had travelled from the bustling Surfers Paradise lifestyle we drove away from a mere few hours ago – this area is truly one of the Gold Coast’s best-kept secrets.

Visit the Canyon Lookout

Scenic Hinterland Day Tour Gold Coast Review

One of the shortest walks to the lookout so far, Canyon lookout is situated directly in front of the car park. With a 60-metre drop-off, the lookout showcases sweeping views of a handful of waterfall including Twin and Rainbow.

Created from millions of years of erosion, The Canyon looks out onto the glistening ocean in the distance.

We ventured back down the road we travelled for a spot of lunch at a local café. With a small variety of sandwiches, burgers, salads and sides on offer we were joined for lunch by two hungry parrots sitting adjacent to us, enjoying their own meal.

The café’s love for wildlife was evident with bird feeding stations scattered around the place. However, when the magpies turned up looking to scavenge some leftovers; that was our cue to leave.

Walk to Natural Bridge

Scenic Hinterland Day Tour Gold Coast Review

Exactly as the name suggests, this is a natural bridge made of rock and crossed by flowing fresh water. With great views of the bridge from all around the circuit, there are three main viewing areas that will give you picturesque views from three distinct angles.

The first was an eye level view of the falls, you could see the rushing water through the natural hole in the bridge, making for great photos. The second stop was from underneath the bridge. A few steps led underneath into the cave for a behind-the-scenes look at the falls.

The damp setting provided great contrast of the area with bats causing a ruckus in the corner and is a popular scene at night when the glow worms light up.

The third lookout point was from above the bridge, we could see the water quickly dispersing around the large boulders before falling down the hole. The walk totalled approximately 1 kilometre taking only about an hour including stops.

Fruit tasting at Buck's Barn

Scenic Hinterland Day Tour Gold Coast Review

Run by the barefoot bushman himself, Buck talked us through the large variety of fruits grown on his farm and the chemical-free products made with this fruit. Serving up some great bush tucker and unique fruits we were given some Japanese seedless mandarins, sweet lady-finger bananas, red paw paw (or papaya) and his famous finger limes.

After we indulged on some of these flavoursome fruits, Buck talked us through a handful of the products made with his fruit. We were given the opportunity to try the range of products including soap, moisturiser, shampoo and conditioner and scrubs as well as edible products jams and honey.

Buck is a busy man; caring for thousands of Yuzo trees and sending between one and two hundred kilograms of Kafir Lime leaves nation wide every week, are just a few of his duties. Born and bred in the small village of Chillingham, Buck’s Barn is a great stop to try some unique fruits and meat a local with a backlog of great stories.

Begin the journey back home

After a long day immersed in the Springbrook National Park we began our trip home. Travelling past the growing cane fields in the Tweed Valley, crossing back over the border and weaving through the streets of Surfers Paradise, we ended our trip. One by one, grateful (tired) passengers departed the bus with kind words for our tour guide, John.

We were lucky to travel on a day without rain or an overflow of tourists. Scenic Hinterland Tours gets no joy out of cancelling tours and will conduct the day even with a minimum of five people.

My Recommendations

Exploring the Gold Coast’s best-kept secret and World Heritage listed Springbrook National Park was a day well spent. The picturesque views, wildlife and comfortable atmosphere help showcase the beauty of this region.
