The staff at Bruny Island Wildlife Cruises were very friendly and gave good advice on what to bring to the 3-hour cruise. The boat was very fast and we found the staff to have a great deal of knowledge of Bruny Island and its surrounds as well as checking up on us to make sure we were okay. It was very cold at the end of May and warm clothes, beanie and gloves are highly recommended.

The tour was very well organised and the guide was very much informative

The tour was very well organised and the guide was very much informative. We were also given tablets to prevent motion sickness and occasional snacks. Lots of photo opportunities and the tour was not rushed over. The boat ride was thrilling and bit bumpy but enjoyable. We were also given fleece jackets and ponchos. Definitely recommended!

What an amazing experience
Vanessa Walsh 3 years ago

What an amazing experience, the tour guides were funny characters and knew the island very well & were very informative, although the weather wasn't ideal, still a great day. Oh my, the seals are very stinky. We enjoyed a beautiful fish & chips at the newly built restaurant, they were extremely busy and although we pre-ordered to avoid delays, it took some time for lunch to arrive, it was well worth the wait & staff were apologetic for the delays. Given it was a peak period, and a full restaurant delays have to be expected. All staff were very friendly.

Great outing

Great outing, made so much more enjoyable by Mick and Nick's down to earth commentary and genuine way of looking after all. Top marks fellows.

Loved the trip
Zeshan Aziz 3 years ago

Loved the trip. Make sure you dress up properly for the trip. It can get very cold and we went on a nice sunny day. Drive safe if taking a rental car. The roads are very good. There is a small gravel part on the journey from the ferry terminal to adventure bay where roadworks are going on. It’s less gravel and more like a underconstruction road.

The 3 hour cruise was fantastic.
Greg Wootton 3 years ago

The 3 hour cruise was fantastic. My expectations were exceeded by miles. To get up so close to the seals, the escarpments, entering the car park all the while combating the significant sea swell was worth every cent. Despite the rough seas and getting a little wet not to mention the chill factor, I would do this again!

We had a very good time with the team who took us on this Bruny Island Cruise
Matt 4 years ago

We had a very good time with the team who took us on this Bruny Island Cruise. Rather than opt for the package tour from Hobart, we had a rental car so we made our own way to Bruny via the ferry from Kettering. It was a very windy day and quite cold but not too bumpy; they provided everyone with seasickness pills before setting out just in case, and the windbreaker "ponchos" they gave us did a good job stopping the wind. The ride out was something of a mix between a boat tour and a jet boat ride, and there was a lot of "jumping" over waves which we enjoyed being young but some other older passengers didn't seem to care for. Saw some amazing cliff faces, a bunch of seals both large and small. The team were very friendly and had a good sense of humour although would recommend they have a PA or speaker system installed as we were sitting right up the front and was hard to hear the commentary. Definitely would recommend this cruise as it's such a unique landscape.

The Bruny Island 3 hour Wilderness Cruise is something not to be missed on a trip to Tasmania
Caitlin 5 years ago

The Bruny Island 3 hour Wilderness Cruise is something not to be missed on a trip to Tasmania. It was an insightful and fun tour that really showed you the true side of Bruny Island. From the chance to see some seals to exploring the beauty of the island this cruise has something for everyone. However, don't forget to bundle up for this tour it actually gets quite cold out on the ocean. Regardless, this cruise is a must-do for Tasmania.

Keep a close lookout for sea eagles soaring above the cliffs, pods of dolphins surfing the bow wave, albatross wheeling on the wind and shearwaters skimming the swells.

Bruny Island 3-hour Wilderness Cruise Review

Matt Hobbs

Experience Oz Travel Writer

Long one of our most popular tours in all of Tasmania, the award-winning Bruny Island cruise with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys was an obvious choice for an itinerary item on our recent trip to Tassie. My partner Eri (a massive wildlife fan) and I had heard nothing but good things about the cruise, which has been ferrying travellers from their departure point of Adventure Bay on lovely Bruny Island since the late 1990's.

We'd been planning a day on Bruny Island for quite some time, as its ease of access from Hobart and mixture of reputation for both food and scenery was enough to draw us in, and given the opportunity to see the island's famously towering sea cliffs, array of marine and bird life, and simply enjoy some fresh ocean air the cruise was thus a must-do.

Bruny Island Tasmania

Any traveller (or aspiring traveller) to Tasmania will likely have seen Pennicott's iconic yellow high-speed boats and bright-red weather-proof ponchos on promotional tourism material, and as it turns out its reputation was well deserved. It was an incredible 3-hour adventure out on the open seas, which we'll outline in more detail below.

How to get there

As mentioned, the Bruny Island wildlife cruise departs from Bruny's Adventure Bay, which lies around a half-hour drive south of the main ferry port on Bruny proper.

Travellers will have a few options to get from Hobart to the departure point on Bruny Island, including:

  • Self-driving from Hobart to Kettering (around 45 minutes) and then taking the ferry across to Bruny Island, then driving another half-hour south to Adventure Bay
  • Self-driving to Kettering, then leaving your car and getting transfers across to Bruny included in the package (at a cost of an extra $15 per adult)
  • OR

  • Option for a full-day tour option that includes coach transfers to and from Hobart to the end point at Adventure Bay, as well as lunch in the price of the tour

The ferry journey from Kettering across to Bruny Island only takes around 20 minutes, and offers multiple departure times around the day (with the final ferry trip of the day at 7:15pm from Bruny Island back to "mainland" Tasmania).

What you'll do

We parked nearby (free of charge) and arrived at Pennicott's office at Adventure Bay on a windy and rather chilly Tasmanian day with around half an hour to spare until our 11am departure time. We took advantage of the departure point's lovely little cafe to enjoy a signature Tassie Curried Scallop Pie (quite the delicacy renowned throughout Tasmania) and a coffee to warm up before the journey.

Board the vessel

We gathered outside for a safety briefing by the team at Pennicott that was delivered with a mixture of seriousness and humour, before being issued our weatherproof ponchos and gloves, these were essentials given the wind and potential water exposure.

We were assigned to one of two of the company's Naiad rigid inflatable vessels with around 30 other passengers. They're quite low-lying vessels that keep you close to all the action and are custom-built to deal with the sometimes rough conditions where the Tasman Sea and the Southern Ocean collide. They also have onboard toilets for when those pre-trip coffees start to catch up, although you'll need to time your bladder with one of the few moments of pausing on the trip as it's otherwise quite a high-speed journey.

Feeling adventurous, Eri and I chose to sit right at the front of the boat, despite the warnings that this was a position that would encounter the most airtime. Those with delicate stomachs were given the option to opt for spots at the back of the vessel instead. They're also quite open boats, so you should prepare to get wet and let your trusty poncho do the bulk of the work.

Heading out from the jetty and into the open ocean, we were advised to keep our eyes peeled for marine life, as pods of dolphins, in particular, are frequently-sighted in this part of the sea.

Learn about & explore the region

The boats soon picked up speed, while our Pennicott guide provided us with some interesting commentary through the vessel's onboard speaker system. The commentary covered the likes of Bruny Island's geological composition, the dense kelp forests that we could see jutting up from the sea floor and some of the wildlife inhabitants that call the area home.

It doesn't take long before the postcard-worthy and ruggedly-beautiful dolerite cliffs of Bruny come into view. They're truly massive and you'll often find yourself craning your neck at impossible angles to view the top, with some clocking in at a jaw-dropping 300m above sea level.

Part of the fun of a Bruny Island cruise is navigating the various gaps, caves and crevasses that water has carved in the marine landscape over the course of 6,000 or so years, as well as experiencing the roller-coaster-like jumps and drops as the inflatable navigates the waves.

The rest of our passengers were a fairly lively bunch who were cheering on each massive drop after the crest of a wave, yet it's possible to see how those with more sensitive inclinations may find the rising and falling a bit much on days of inclement weather.

The boat drivers at Pennicott know the area like the back of their hand from cruising around them for many years, however, they still have a cheeky habit of making guiding the boat through the various rock formations seem like a challenge. Their skills are showcased on the journey around the towering Monument as it juts out of the water at a narrow distance from Bruny Island. It's all in good fun though, and their expertise in fitting the boat through this narrow passageway was admirable.

We also paused on several occasions to witness natural blowholes as the swell rose and fell into a handful of sea caves that pocket the island, the volume (and sound) of the water generated was impressive, to say the least.

Visit local Fur Seal Colonies

While we did not encounter any dolphins during our trip, we pushed on to the rocks of the Friars where we encountered a colony of Australian Fur Seals lazing in the sun. Some of them were more active than others, and it was impressive to see how some of the younger seals navigated their way across what looked like a fairly hazardous and steep rock wall.

After taking in our fill of both animal and landscape scenery, we were issued some Tim Tams for the return trip back for a hit of Aussie-infused sugar energy, and arrived back at Adventure Bay shortly thereafter, elated in what we had just witnessed.

What to bring

Standard tour options (cruise-only) don't include a meal, so either bringing your own lunch or some money to purchase food at Pennicott's excellent little cafe comes recommended.

Be sure to rug up if travelling in the colder months; wear thick clothing as it gets COLD on the open ocean, and while the provided ponchos provide protection from the wind and water, they are fairly thin in terms of warmth.

Our Recommendations

There's a reason this cruise has been awarded countless tourism awards over the past several years, and it shows in all aspects of the operation. The boats are top-notch, staff are friendly, and the obvious drawcard of seeing such a unique landscape within a reasonable span of time allows for plenty of time to explore some of the other experiences Bruny Island has to offer.

Those who aren't fans of the cold may want to opt for a warmer season and the queasy traveller is best to sit up the back of the boat, otherwise, this would be an enjoyable experience year-round.

Personally, I'd recommend taking the morning (11am) departure option as this allows more time for enjoying some of the signature culinary offerings Bruny Island has developed a reputation for afterwards, including freshly-shucked oysters, or gourmet-quality boutique cheeses. However, those staying overnight on Bruny can just as easily choose the later itinerary as well as the ideal capper to a day of adventure.
