Port Douglas is a seaside town whose economy is based almost entirely around the ocean and its benefits; whether they be tourism, fishing, or marine life, all have close ties to the town and are the major reason why it is one of the preferred holiday destinations in not only Queensland, but all of Australia. The town's small population, numbering less than two thousand people, can easily double during the height of the tourist season as people flock to its warm climate with the aim to participate in its huge range of reef and island tours - the Great Barrier Reef is close by, along with an assortment of popular islands for cruises and day tours such as the Low Isles, Green Island, and Fitzroy Island. Many are also drawn to the green beauty of the nearby Daintree Rainforest, an ancient, World Heritage-protected site bristling with environmental wonders.
