Perth Weather and Climate Information for Visitors

Overview

Perth WeatherPerth is a coastal city of sunshine and ocean breezes, with a large proportion of sunny days throughout the year giving it an energetic, cosmopolitan feel. With a mediterranean climate, even the short Winter full of days where the sun is shining - leading to most activities that draw people to visit Perth revolving around the outdoors. Sightseeing, enjoying the beaches by the pristine oceans, touring around the region either by foot or other form of transport and all similar activities are available throughout the year while being highly enjoyable. Perth can also make claim to being the "sunniest capital in Australia" with an average of eight hours of sunshine per day. Bordered by white, sandy beaches and a gorgeous river to the other side, Perth is truly Australia's Western gem.

Temperatures and Rainfall

Perth's temperate climate provides a nice balance compared to the inconsistency of some other Australian destinations - you can expect weather forecasts on the news to actually be accurate most of the time! Maximum temperatures throughout the year reach an average of approximately 24.5°C (76.1°F) with a yearly minimum average of 12.7°C (54.9°F) - both figures indicative of the relatively mild climate that has contributed to Perth's recent tourist boom.

Winter brings with it the wettest months, which are at their heaviest from June through to September, so bringing anti-rain gear if travelling during this time may prove advantageous (although is not entirely necessary.)

Seasons

Perth's climate from season to season is consistently mild, and although the "extreme" parts of the seasonal cycle can have a physical effect on people, they are usually extremely brief and the temperature and weather soon return to the norm. A staple of Perth's seasons is the wind known as the "Fremantle Doctor", a strong sea breeze that blows in from the ocean and soothes the burdens of any excessive hot periods that may be hitting the city by blowing away the hot air trapped above the Perth metro area. If you are looking for a destination with stable, consistently pleasant weather to experience your holiday in Australia at, Perth is a great choice for most of the calendar year.

Summer

The Summer months are hot and officially kick off in December, with temperatures that range from warm to hot, although the peaks are usually reached towards the end of January and beginning of February. The weather is mostly fine and dry, and rain during this season is highly unusual. While average maximums hover around the 30 degree celsius mark, the aforementioned Fremantle Doctor sea breeze can be consistently and reliably called upon to ease the pain and bring welcome relief on any excessively hot days! Perth's beaches are a staple hotspot for this season and are some of the most beautiful of any highly-developed area in the country. Water restrictions can sometimes be applicable during the Summer seasons due to the dryness and overall lack of rainfall.

Autumn

Beginning in March and finishing at the end of May, Autumn in Perth is not truly typical of most people's images of Autumns they they are familiar with. Practically an extension of Summer, albeit with slightly cooler nights, the days are still filled with sunshine although there is an increasing chance of the occasional shower or increased amounts of humidity. In recent years, Perth has been experiencing spat of heat waves extending from Summer into Autumn, which many climatologists have cited with varying levels of concern (and blame directed in various directions!) Both Autumn and Spring are prime times to visit the many scenic destinations in and around Perth, including its lovely Swan River and Swan Valley (which is famous as being the state's "Valley of Taste").

Winter

As far as Winters go, Perth's is especially mild, beginning at the start of June and finishing at the end of August. Generally a rainy season intermingled with cool, sunny days, the season is also characterised by occasional storms that can be signified by sudden downpours of rain along with spectacular displays of lightning and thunder. Basically in Perth, when it rain, it really DOES rain - the volume is heavy and the temperature drops quickly as a result, so carrying an umbrella becomes a smart undertaking during Winters. Ice or frost in the mornings is also a rarity.

Spring

Spring begins in September in Perth and, from this point forward, the weather soon warms up to fine, sunny conditions that then continue for the majority of months to follow. Perth's Springs are sunny and warm, with the weather generally being fine and rain being either minimal or absent. It is this combination of warm sun and temperate weather that have helped Perth cement its reputation as a world-renowned wine and food locate that reaches its pinnacle during Spring. One of the most popular destinations during this period is the nearby Vally of the Giants which contains the famed "Treetop Walk" amidst some of the tallest trees on the entire Australian continent, all at their greenest.
