Melbourne is second only to Sydney in the grand scale of Australia as a whole, but the difference is slim and both cities are comparable in terms of economic power and influence. Melrbourne's suburbs branch out from the city centre which overlooks the impressive Port Phillip Bay, and the city - despite being a large metropolis home to the head office's of some of the country's most prestigious companies - still manages to strike a great balance between urban build up and tranquil greenery. Melbourne is also often described as having a "European" atmosphere due to its shopping districts and large number of outdoor cafes, and the city has a strong sporting tradition due to its status as the birthplace of Aussie Rules Football, being home to the Melbourne Cup (Australia's largest annual horse racing event), and the site of Rod Laver Arena, where some of Australia's most historic international tennis matches have taken place.
Melbourne has a fairly large international airport located in the city's North-West which ranks as the second-busiest airport in the country and ferries passengers across flight paths from all over the world.
