Hervey Bay has made its mark on the tourism industry almost entirely due to its proximity to the amazing Fraser Island - the world's largest sand island - that draws tourists each year due to its gigantic, multicoloured sand dunes, diverse wildlife, and beautiful lagoons and national parks. The city is situated almost entirely along the coastline, and does not branch inland very far; even its airport is located less than five kilometres from the beach! A range of ferries and cruises depart from Hervey Bay's port on a daily basis, many of which head to Fraser Island or to explore the beauty of the Coral Sea.
