Cairns has grown rapidly over the years due to its booming tourist economy as millions of visitors a year from all over the globe. It's tropical climate along with its proximity to the awe-inspiring vastness of the Great Barrier Reef has made it a tourist hotbed, and the city itself has developed to provide all the modern conveniences of a large city.
Cairns is laid out in a vertical fashion, stretching far further from North to South than it does from East to West; it can be easily traversed by travelling through the Bruce and Captain Cook highways that will take you from one end of the city to the other without a huge time investment. Cairns has an international airport that is located to the far North of the city centre.
