The tagline of the Jabbawockeez’s newest production, MÜS.I.C, is LAUGH. CHEER. MOVE. – and that is exactly what the Experience Oz crew did when we recently caught the high-energy dance show at the Gold Coast’s Jupiters Theatre.

While considered a dance show, the performances delivered by the freestyle, hip hop dance crew, Jabbawockeez, are so much more than what you’d expect. They entertain on more levels than movement alone – they captivate audiences of all ages through comedic and dramatic themes, through a diverse, popular song list, through intricate costumes and sets, through cross-generational cultural references, through audience involvement and through entertaining story telling.

MÜS.I.C opened with and maintained throughout a funny and symbolic motif; as the show began, a quirky character dressed as a janitor cleaned up around the crowds and, later, swept several people, including incorporated audience members, off the stage. Like the show's story and themes, the story of how Jabbawockeezcame to be is inspiring. This now-famous dance crew came from meager beginnings, starting in 2003 as a three-person group of diverse dance styles, performing in small venues in San Diego and Los Angeles.

While they earned a following on YouTube, it wasn’t until 2006 that the Jabbawockeez really caught the world’s attention, when they competed on America’s Got Talent, then won America’s Best Dance Crew. Viewers everywhere were widely impressed by their un-human-like movements, their unique presentations and personalities and, of course, their signature plain white masks and gloves.

Throughout MÜS.I.C, colleagues and I tried to pick out which crew member was doing what moves, but were unsuccessful. Part way through the show, it was explained to us that the costumes, especially the masks, are far more than a gimmick; they are used to ensure viewers focus on the group rather than the individual – and to appreciate the dance itself.

There are no Beyonces, Kirt Cobains or Gene Simmons to steal the spotlight in Jabbawockeez. It is a crew that performs a united dance – and there is nothing to distract audience members from that. Further, it is incredible how expressive the characters are in faceless outfits – and how “loud” they are for mimes. Jabbawockeez do an amazing job at captivating, encouraging sympathy and amusing the audience solely through sound and movement.

The 90-minute production, MÜS.I.C, has travelled from Las Vegas to entertain Gold Coast locals and visitors alike. It is directed by Emmy-nominated and So You Think You Can Dance choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon – and, once you’ve watched this show, you will understand why these choreographers are so internationally acclaimed.

All aspects of the production are strategically and creatively planned to appeal to people of all ages and interests. One of the most effective ways they achieved this is through the show’s diverse hit song list; tracks included original music and remixes of songs from Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Prodigy, Gene Kelly, James Brown, LMFAO, New Kids On The Block, The Eagles, Queen, Black Eyed Peas, Cold Play and more.

They also incorporated dance styles and costumes that reference significant popular cultural trends and people throughout the generations. For example, in one scene, dancers took on several personas, such as Elvis, a disco clubber and a rugby player, among many others. Our group’s enjoyment of this production is a testament to its successful development; our group ranged from ages 20 to 45, some knew of Jabbawockeez and some did not, but all of us were thoroughly entertained.

Adding to the impressiveness of this production was the revamped theatre it was presented in. The Jupiters Hotel & Casino recently invested over $20 million in upgrading and renovating the Jupiters Theatre, which is now considered a world-class venue and among the best in Australia. It has doubled its capacity, now able to accommodate 1929 seated guests or 2150 including standing room; has a beautiful décor complete with spacious, comfortable chairs; has a large stage and a layout ideal for clear viewing from any seat; and a knock-your-socks-off sound system. At MÜS.I.C, audience members’ bones were shaking to the base and their heads and feet bouncing to the rhythm. No question about it - Jabbawockeez more than achieved their aim of uniquely and impressively harmonising sound and movement.
