Things to do in Byron Bay

The Top 10 Things to Do in Byron Bay

Byron Bay attracts many tourists for its large, clean beaches with great surfs, spectacular coastal views, a happening cultural scene, and alternative lifestyle.

1. Surf the Byron Bay

Some of Australia’s best beaches can be found along the northern coast of New South Wales. The sand is fine and white and the waters are clear and turquoise. There are many areas that offer great surf breaks as they are sheltered from the southerlies.

2. Hike to Cape Byron

The meeting spot of the Coral Sea and the Tasman Sea, Cape Byron is the most easterly point of mainland Australia. Take a scenic walk through rainforest and by heritage cottages to the Byron Bay Lighthouse, built in 1901. From there, enjoy panoramic views of the beautiful beaches, ocean and hinterland. Also, spot dolphins, rays, sea turtles, and whales during the appropriate seasons.

3. Attend a cultural event

As a cultural hub, Byron Bay hosts many interesting events, primarily focused on the arts, all year. Examples of these events include the Byron Bay Writers Festival, the Bluesfest, the Underwater Festival, the Surf Festival in the International Film Festival and the Nimbin MardiGrass, among many other event options. Check out what festivals are on during your visit at the Byron Vistor Centre’s website.

4. See Byron Bay from above

Byron Bay has a stunning coastline and hinterland, which look gorgeous from a bird’s eye perspective.

5. Live like a hippy

Byron Bay is known for its alternative lifestyle. In fact, it is recognized for being the Australian birthplace of the hippy culture. Mellow out while you are visiting—leave your shoes at home, book a new age de-stressing treatment, get a reading done, spend the day at the beach, or join one of the following tours:

  • Tour Byron Bay’s hinterland and visit a hippy village in a Nimbin day tour.
  • Find peace and visit the giant Blessing Buddha in the magical gardens of the Crystal Castle.

6. Explore the seas

While viewing Byron Bay from great heights is breathtaking, it is also fun to physically experience it. Rent a kayak or take a guided sea kayak tour to explore the waters. Surf the waves in your kayak while getting up close and personal with a variety of marine life.

7. Hike the hinterland

Be sure to see what Byron Bay’s lush rainforests have to offer. Take a guided tour or grab a map and explore independently.

  • For a unique experience, join a night vision bushwalk. See nocturnal wildlife using night vision goggles while trekking through the hinterland.
