The Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Tour from Cairns
A Review Based on First-Hand Experiences
The Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Tour from Cairns brings guests from their doors to the station, where they board the Kuranda Scenic Rail and enjoy a journey through the spectacular tropical area, stopping at Red Peak Station's rainforest boardwalk through towering Kauri Pine and at the Barron Gorge and Falls. The railway journey ends at Kurranda station, where they can explore Heritage Markets and other highlights in and near the “Village in the Rainforest”. The day concludes with a stunning ride on the Skyrail, a 7.5km scenic journey - or guests can do this tour in reverse, beginning with the Skyrail and ending with the Scenic Rail! Experience Oz recently enjoyed this experience and wants to share the details of this day tour with you. For more information, read the following review:
One of Experience Oz’s team members, Michelle, and her partner, Kyle, travelled to Cairns for the Easter long weekend to experience some of the activities that Tropical North Queensland has to offer – and one of these must-do experiences was the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Tour.
This day trip began with the couple being picked up from their hotel in Cairns and driven to the Skyrail base near Tjapukai, a drive that took just ten minutes. There, they received their boarding passes, listened to an informative talk about Kuranda and decided which attractions they wanted to do once in Kuranda.
Once at Skyrail, Michelle and Kyle boarded the gondola right away and began their 7.5km scenic journey over the rainforest canopy, during which they were free to make two spots; they discovered the spectacular highlights, such as the forest boardwalks and the magnificent Barron Falls.
This 1.5-hour journey concluded at Kuranda, but the exploration was far from over. The couple spent hours enjoying the “Village of the Rainforest”, which is home to plenty of charming cafes and Heritage Markets, as well as acclaimed attractions, including the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Australian Venom Zoo, Birdworld, Kuranda Koala Gardens and Kuranda Riverboat Tours, among several others.
Michelle and Kyle enjoyed lunch and wandered the markets, before joining a Kuranda Riverboat Tour; costing only $15 extra per person, it is a 45-minute excursion that the couple highly recommends! They spotted several animals, including a freshwater croc bathing on the riverbank, and fed some fish and turtles!
While the natural beauty astounded them, the local, knowledgeable guide equally impressed them. He shared with them interesting facts about the rainforest, the crocs and the other marine life in the river – and, in Michelle’s words, the guide, Brian Clark, was “absolutely brilliant”.
In the afternoon, they boarded the Kuranda Scenic Rail for a 1.5-hour ride to Freshwater Station, where they caught the return coach to their Cairns hotel. From door to door, Michelle and Kyle thoroughly enjoyed this scenic day tour through the rainforest and highly recommend the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Tour to anyone visiting Cairns!
