Hervey Bay is best known as the “Whale Watching Capital” of Australia and also is the gateway to World Heritage listed Fraser Island.
Whale Watching season begins each year from late July up until early November. These magnificent creatures start to flock to this region from late July to early November, but they aren't the only highlight that Hervey Bay has to offer; visitors to this popular getaway region can also expect to participate in a wide range of other attractions including watersports, tours of the many impressive natural features that populate the area, fishing trips and charters through both the tropical oceans and inland fresh water areas, scenic flights, or simply relaxing in the beautiful island surrounds.
It will typically take less than a couple of hours to familiarise yourself with the general “feel” of Hervey Bay, but to assist you in experiencing all its wonders in detail there are multiple tours available that will take you to witness them in detail. The aforementioned shores of Fraser Island – the world's largest sand island – are only a short trip away and its unique blend of beach and forestry along with its famous multi-coloured sands are a sight to behold, while the waters which surround the region are also populated with a large number of friendly local dolphins which can be hand-fed in shallow bays that many tours perform regular trips to each day.
If the simple act of relaxing isn't your thing and a dose of adrenaline is in order, Hervey Bay is also one of Australia's most popular skydiving destinations due to its perennially clear skies and amazing scenery which can be viewed during the freefall from thousands of feet above.
